Russian ballistic missiles and drones struck Kyiv during the night between Friday and Saturday, killing at least nine people and wounding 28, according to the mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The attacks damaged residential buildings and other sites across Kyiv, with Zelensky writing on X that "Diciotto edifici residenziali, una scuola, l'ambasciata lituana e infrastrutture" were hit.

In the Darnytskyi district, authorities counted seven deaths and 14 injuries, while in the Solomianskyi district two people died and eight were injured after a five-story residential building was hit, according to Quotidiano Nazionale.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it launched a "attacco massiccio" targeting "impianti del complesso militare-industriale e centri logistici" in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as reported by Quotidiano Nazionale.

Ukrainian officials said the strike left blackout in multiple areas of the capital, and the Il Sole 24 ORE report said the 28 injured included children and that 17 were the most serious injuries.

Patriot shortage and blame

Volodymyr Zelensky said only one ballistic missile was intercepted because there were not enough Patriot interceptors, writing that "Solo un missile balistico è stato intercettato".

Euronews reported that Zelensky renewed his appeal for more Patriot interceptors, saying the lack of them "incoraggia la Russia a lanciare attacchi che costano vite umane".

The Russian Defense Ministry framed the strike as aimed at military-industrial and logistics targets, while Zelensky accused Russia of hitting normal residential buildings and said the attacks caused "numerosi incendi" and damage in seven districts.

The Il Sole 24 ORE report also quoted Zelensky arguing that partner support is urgent, saying each package of ballistic missile interceptors "salva la vita dei nostri cittadini".

In Washington, Euronews said Donald Trump appeared to move away from allowing Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles, quoting Trump: "Non abbiamo dato il via libera. Ne stiamo parlando."

Aftermath and what’s at risk

Kyiv’s emergency response continued after the strikes, with the Quotidiano Nazionale report saying "105 persone a Kiev sono state tratte in salvo tra le macerie".

Euronews described damage to Kyivmedspetstrans, saying four buildings were "parzialmente distrutti" and five ambulances were "completamente bruciate" after the raids.

The Washington Post report framed the moment around Zelensky’s claim that Ukraine has "no interceptors" as Russian ballistic missiles hit Kyiv early, tying the attacks to the shortage of Western anti-ballistic defenses.

Zelensky and Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha linked the next phase of the war to air-defense deliveries, with Sybiha writing that "L'Ucraina ha bisogno con urgenza di ulteriori sistemi di difesa aerea".

Quotidiano Nazionale added that Russia said it intercepted and destroyed 274 Ukrainian drones during the night, while Wildberries said one of its logistics centers in Volgograd was targeted, and Kiev accused the company of storing components for drones and supporting the Russian army.
