ABC News reported that the Ukrainian air force said Russia launched 68 missiles, including 23 ballistic missiles, and 351 drones, while it said 37 missiles and 326 drones were shot down or otherwise suppressed.

The NBC News account said the attack came hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was set to plead for more firepower at a NATO summit in Turkey, and it said all of the ballistic missiles launched by Russia struck their targets.
NBC News also quoted Zelenskyy saying, “This time again, Russia’s main targets were Kyiv and the region,” and it said residential buildings had been hit.
In the wider Kyiv region, ABC News said six people were killed and at least 26 were injured, according to regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk, while Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least 26 people were hospitalized.
Patriot shortage blamed
Ukrainian officials and leaders tied the inability to stop ballistic missiles to interceptor shortages, with Zelenskyy warning that “insufficient supply of interceptor missiles” left Kyiv unable to shoot down any ballistic missiles in the attack.
The BBC said the Ukrainian Air Force warned of a “serious shortage” of interceptor missiles and that none of the 23 ballistic missiles fired at Kyiv on Sunday night were shot down.

Zelenskyy pressed allies to act at the NATO summit, and ABC News quoted him writing that it was “very important that the world, especially America and our European partners, come out of the NATO summit in Ankara with strong decisions” to support air defense.
NBC News reported that Zelenskyy said it was “critically important that the world — first and foremost the United States and our European partners — come out of the NATO Summit in Ankara with strong decisions in support of our air defense.”
Russia’s Defense Ministry described the overnight attack as “a massive strike with high-precision long-range weapons,” and it claimed its forces intercepted at least 625 Ukrainian drones overnight and into Monday.
Casualties, damage, next steps
After the strike, ABC News said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the city’s regional administration reported at least 15 people were killed and more than 50 were injured, with rescue teams searching for additional victims under the rubble of destroyed residential buildings.
NBC News added that damage had been reported at more than 10 locations across the capital, including residential buildings, and it said Zelenskyy later told the nations that 22 people had been killed and 90 injured.
The BBC described the destruction visible on Monday morning, including that three large blocks of flats in the city have partially collapsed, and it said helicopters were shuttling back and forth carrying water from the river to douse fires.
Looking ahead, ABC News said the strikes came on the eve of the NATO summit in Turkey on Tuesday and Wednesday, where U.S. President Donald Trump was scheduled to meet with Zelenskyy.
In the same reporting, ABC News said Trump told ABC News’ Selina Wang that he and Putin were “getting much closer than people realize” to ending the war, while Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it targeted military-industrial and energy facilities in Kyiv.
