Dylan Larkin will miss start of Red Wings training camp with an upper-body injury. Injury occurred during off-ice training earlier this week.

Larkin misses camp opener
Detroit Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Dylan Larkin will not skate when training camp starts on Thursday because of an upper-body injury sustained earlier this week during off-ice training. Horcoff said Larkin will be with the team rehabbing but “won’t be on the ice participating,” and he added, “It’s going to take him a little bit of time to get back from it.” The injury delays Larkin’s start with on-ice activities as the Red Wings prepare for camp running from Thursday through Sunday, with the first practice of camp Thursday morning.
The Edwardsville Intelligencer reported that Larkin’s future with the franchise is in limbo because he asked to be traded during the offseason, and it said the Red Wings announced last week that Larkin is no longer the team’s captain. The Central Oregon Daily said Larkin is signed through 2031 and that the team will start the season without a captain after he requested a trade early in the offseason following a 10th consecutive missed playoff season.

Horcoff keeps talks private
Horcoff told reporters that the front office would keep discussions with Larkin “in-house” and declined to provide an update on his trade request, saying the center has the full support of the Red Wings.
In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Horcoff said, “We hope so,” when asked about optimism that Larkin could be skating before the end of training camp, while also saying, “there’s no timeline for that right now.”

The Detroit News reported Horcoff said he has full authority on all hockey operations, including a potential Larkin trade, but he wouldn’t address whether Larkin’s position has changed.
Horcoff also framed the situation as non-disruptive, telling reporters, “We’re a better team with Dylan Larkin in our lineup,” while the Red Wings announced they would start the season without a captain.
The New York Times reported that Horcoff echoed players’ statements from this summer with “We’re a better team with Dylan Larkin in our lineup,” as it described Larkin as the team’s No. 1 center and now-former captain who requested a trade this summer.
Contracts and roster stakes
With Larkin sidelined for the start of camp, Horcoff said his pressing priorities include a new deal for unsigned restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson and an extension for forward Alex DeBrincat.
“We’re happy that he's here in camp. He has the full support of us, and we look forward to getting him healthy and back on the ice.”
The Detroit News reported Horcoff said Edvinsson is expected to participate in Thursday’s training camp practices but remains unsigned, calling signing him “a priority for us.”
The Detroit News also said DeBrincat has one season left on his contract but has been eligible to sign a new contract since July 1, and Horcoff said, “We’re going to get to Alex shortly.”
Horcoff told reporters he would keep the Dylan situation from becoming a distraction, and he said, “We’re excited to get Dylan healthy and get him back to camp,” while the team prepares for preseason beginning Monday.
The NHL article said Horcoff has full authority on all hockey operations, including a potential Larkin trade, and it quoted him saying, “We’re happy that he's here in camp. He has the full support of us, and we look forward to getting him healthy and back on the ice.”
