Starbase Louisiana announced
SpaceX unveiled plans on Tuesday to build its largest rocket launch complex yet in southern Louisiana, a $100 billion effort to transform coastal wetlands into a critical base for Starship and AI satellite launch ambitions.

The project, named Starbase Louisiana, will be built on Pecan Island in Louisiana’s Vermilion Parish on a 125,000-acre site, and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the “self-sustaining” spaceport will include its own methane production for propellant, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities, and probably an airport.
Reuters said construction will begin next year with the first Starship launch in 2029, and Shotwell detailed the plans at an event with Governor Jeff Landry and other senior state officials.
CNBC reported that SpaceX will establish its Starbase in Vermilion Parish at a former Exxon property to support thousands of launches annually, and it said Musk’s push is tied to Starship’s role as the in-development rocket designed to be fully reusable.

At the announcement event near the proposed site in Vermilion Parish, Landry framed the deal as more than infrastructure, saying, "It represents jobs for our families."
SpaceX said the Louisiana site will add more than 3,000 jobs to the region, and CNBC added that a fact sheet posted online by the state of Louisiana estimated “3,000 direct new jobs over the next 10 years” and “8,100 indirect new jobs.”
Shotwell described the project as a major expansion of SpaceX’s Starship launch operations beyond South Texas and those planned for Florida, and she said the facility would become a self-sustaining spaceport with propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities, and an airport on site.
Spectrum News 13 quoted SpaceX’s own statement that the company was “committed to investing at least $100 billion and creating more than 3,000 new jobs at Starbase, Louisiana,” and it said the spaceport is designed to support thousands of Starship flights a year with 10 launch pads.
Capacity targets and next steps
SpaceX and state officials tied Starbase Louisiana to a major increase in flight cadence, with Reuters saying the marshland site will eventually launch thousands of Starship flights a year and that Shotwell said “very large portions” of the land will remain natural wetlands with no infrastructure.

The plan also connects to Starship’s broader mission timeline, because Reuters said the first Starship launch from the site is targeted for 2029 and CNBC said SpaceX’s Starship is designed to be fully reusable.
SpaceX said it would work on “historic coastal restoration” in Louisiana, in partnership with the state to “bring the marsh back” and ensure the wetlands around its new facility will have “storm protection,” and it said the search for a site took about seven years.
In parallel, Reuters reported that SpaceX’s southern footprint has already expanded with a Colossus AI data center in Tennessee and Mississippi and Starlink facilities in Austin, Texas, and it said the company is planning a chip plant in central Texas.
