Starlink adds monthly kit fee
Starlink has started charging a $10 monthly hardware rental fee for new users, shifting away from one-time purchases and adding the fee on top of recent subscription price increases.
“Il ne sera plus possible de laisser la parabole du Starlink Mini au fin fond du garage 11 mois sur 12 sans s’en servir et sans rien payer”
Ars Technica says Starlink residential ordering pages now show an upfront hardware cost of $0 and a monthly kit fee of $10, with the monthly kit fee described as “in addition to Internet service prices.”

PCMag reported that the change adds $10 per month to a Starlink Residential subscription and that SpaceX previously offered the standard Starlink dish to new users as a free rental.
PCMag also tied the new fee to specific plan prices, saying the $10 monthly kit fee is added to the $55/month 100Mbps, $85/month 200Mbps, and $130/month Residential Max options.
Pause, speed, and limits
In France, Selectra described Starlink’s “Lite” subscription at €29 per month, while also emphasizing that the hardware is usually offered at €349 in France and that the real bill over 12 months becomes €697.
Selectra said the Lite offer changes network management because “With the Lite offer, you are not given priority in case of high traffic,” which means speeds can drop during peak hours.

In Spain, Xataka Móvil reported a limited-time promotion that brings the cheapest plan down to just 10 euros, with Residential 100 Mbps at 10 euros per month instead of 29 euros per month and Residential 200 Mbps at 20 euros per month instead of 39 euros per month.
Xataka Móvil also stated that the discounted prices apply for the first three months as long as users sign up before April 30, and it noted a 30-day trial period with terms about returning the kit for a full refund if canceled within 30 days after the payment due date.
Global rollout and business impact
Ars Technica reported that a Starlink support article said hardware rental is now “in select countries” and that “Starlink kits may only be rented for Residential service plans.”
“SpaceX's connectivity service adjusted its pricing in Argentina and reinforces its presence as an alternative to traditional providers”
Ars Technica also said PCMag reported the $10 rental fee “appears to be rolling out globally, popping up on Starlink.com for new customers in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Australia, and Mexico.”
PCMag connected the change to a broader pricing shift and said SpaceX previously offered the standard dish as a free rental, but now demands that new users pay extra to join.
In Senegal, NDARINFO framed the practical stakes as an upfront investment, saying the Starlink Mini kit is sold at 117,000 FCFA and the Residential Lite plan is billed at 22,000 FCFA per month, while delivery and shipping fees typically amount to around 14,000 FCFA depending on the final receiving geographic zone.
