Owori killed in Kampala
Ugandan football captain David Owori, 27, of Sports Club (SC) Villa, was fatally assaulted by suspected robbers outside his home in Makindye, Kampala, after he resisted an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.

Briefly News said witnesses saw the attackers strike him with paving stones before fleeing, leaving him unconscious, and it added that police were pursuing leads while the crime scene was documented and processed to preserve evidence.
The BBC reported that Owori was beaten by suspected robbers near his home in Kampala after resisting the theft of his mobile phone and other belongings, and it said he was rushed to a medical facility before dying on Wednesday.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye told journalists that Owori was ambushed as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed for medical attention, and the club said it had lost “more than the death of a player, but that of a leader, brother, and friend.”
Tributes and police response
In response to Owori’s death, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) honoured him as “a leader both on and off the pitch who had inspired a generation,” while the Uganda Cranes said the national team had lost a football star who carried the hopes of the country.
Briefly News quoted police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirming that detectives were following leads and that the crime scene had been documented and processed to collect and preserve evidence.

SC Villa’s spokesperson Asan Kasingye told journalists that Owori was targeted just outside his home in Makindye and said, "The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility."
Calls for action and legacy
Owori’s death has intensified debate in Uganda about violent crime in Kampala, with Briefly News noting it came weeks after the fatal mob attack on Ugandan rugby international Sydney Gongodyo in the same city.

The BBC said Parliament observed a minute’s silence in honour of Owori and called for a quick investigation, while it also described how Owori returned to SC Villa in 2023 for a second spell and helped secure the club’s first league title in 20 years in 2024.
Briefly News added that Owori was widely known by his nickname Colgate and that his contract extension ran until January 2027, after he was integral to SC Villa’s 17th top-flight crown in 2024.
In the same coverage, the BBC quoted FUFA describing Owori as “a true leader on and off the pitch,” and it said he was regarded as a strong contender for future call-ups to the Cranes after featuring during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
