Oyo Nyimba Dies at 34
Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro, died at 34, with Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announcing the death in a post on X late on Thursday.
“Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was the King of Tooro”
Reuters said the king died at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, and Akiiki did not reveal the cause of death.

The Tooro Kingdom prime minister said, "It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV," as Uganda’s traditional monarchies continued to preside over their kingdoms as constituted in the pre-colonial period.
ABC News described Oyo Nyimba as a Ugandan "boy king" who ascended his ancient throne as an infant and fascinated world leaders as he grew older.
Reuters also reported that Balaam Barugahara, a minister in the government of President Yoweri Museveni, said shortly before the announcement that the king was receiving treatment in the U.S.
Crown Continuity and Grief
Akiiki said, "The continuity of the Crown is assured," adding that Oyo Nyimba left behind a Prince as his heir whose identity would be formally revealed later in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.
ABC News reported that the death shocked many Ugandans who did not know the king was being treated for an unknown illness abroad, after Tooro authorities had assured Ugandans that Oyo remained alive but in critical condition.
Deputy Parliament Speaker Thomas Tayebwa told ITVX, "This is very difficult to comprehend," as tributes were issued following the announcement.
Reuters said the king was unmarried and that his death triggered an outpouring of grief across social media platforms in Uganda and widespread media coverage nationally.
On X, Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine posted, "Most devastating news! May His Majesty the King's soul rest in eternal peace," after the announcement of the king’s death.
Treatment Abroad and What Next
Before the death was announced, Reuters reported that Balaam Barugahara said the king was receiving treatment in the U.S., while Anadolu Ajansı said reports claimed he was suffering from cancer and was being treated in the US.

The Economic Times said the exact cause of King Oyo’s death was not immediately disclosed, even as it described his reign beginning when he became monarch after his father’s death and his official coronation on September 12, 1995.
New Vision Online said Oyo Nyimba passed away aged 34 on August 27, 2026, and that the announcement was made by Toro Premier Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki who said the monarch died at approximately 10:00pm.
Across the coverage, the immediate focus remained on the heir and the kingdom’s next steps, with Akiiki reiterating that "His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir" and that the heir’s identity would be revealed at the appropriate time.
