Trump Administration Strikes Iran, Reimposes Sanctions After Missile Attacks Near Strait of Hormuz
Key Takeaways
- Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei reappointed as judiciary chief.
- Analysts say appointment foreshadows more political executions.
- Funeral context and mourning accompany the leadership transition.
Ceasefire Breaks, Strikes Hit
The National Council of Resistance of Iran said that after the Iran/US ceasefire broke down last night, American missiles rained down on 80 strategic sites early Wednesday and the Iranian underground took down 600 regime websites following US airstrikes.
“The decision to retain Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei as judiciary chief underscores the new leadership’s reliance on security officials, mass executions, and politically motivated prosecutions to preserve power”
The same brief reported that the regime of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei came under fire from American missiles and that students supporting the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) triggered raids on university websites, including those of K.N. Toosi University of Technology, Tarbiat Modares University, and the University of Isfahan.

It also said the US military “completed” a new round of strikes on Iran, hitting over 80 targets, and that the Trump administration reimposed sanctions on Iranian oil sales in retaliation for attacks on commercial ships near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran warned it would deliver a “crushing response” to the US strikes, and Iranian state media reported explosions on Kharg island, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, and on Qeshm Island.
The brief further said security in the Strait of Hormuz was expected to be discussed by US President Donald Trump and other NATO leaders as they gather in Ankara, Turkey.
Judiciary Chief Reappointed
Iran reappointed Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei as chief justice for another five-year term amid the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei confirming the reappointment in a text message attributed to Iran’s new head of state.
The yaliBnan report said Mohseni-Ejei emphasised the need to avenge the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and prosecute foreign ‘aggressors’, and it quoted him on state TV saying, “Why do our dear people say ‘Revenge, revenge’?”

In a separate account, Iran News Update said the decision to retain Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei as judiciary chief “underscores the new leadership’s reliance on security officials, mass executions, and politically motivated prosecutions to preserve power.”
That same report described Ejei’s five-year term extension as continuity over reform and said the judiciary would remain “an instrument of repression rather than justice.”
It added that Amnesty International said “more than 1,000 executions were carried out in 2025,” while other human rights organizations documented “at least 1,639 executions in 2025.”
Protests, Prosecution, and Power
The National Council of Resistance of Iran brief said hackers replaced front pages with slogans celebrating the Iranian resistance, including “Death to the ruthless King Mojtaba” and “Curse be upon the bloodthirsty Khomeini.”
“Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei”
It also reported that the attacks happened as Iran holds a funeral for the late supreme leader, while the US reimposed oil sanctions and Iran warned of a “crushing response.”
In the judiciary-focused reporting, yaliBnan said Article 158 of the Islamic Republic’s constitution gives the head of the judicial branch authority over the judiciary’s organisational structure and the hiring, dismissal, transfer, promotion and assignment of judges.
The yaliBnan account also said Mohseni-Ejei can appoint the head of the Supreme Court and the prosecutor general after consultation with Supreme Court judges, and it described his ability to nominate six legal jurists of the 12-member constitutional watchdog known as the Guardian Council.
A separate message published by خبرگزاری برنا from Attorney General Mohammad Movahedi-Azad congratulated Mohseni-Ejei and said, “We announce that we will sincerely support your work.”
