Trump pitches Atlantic name

Donald Trump said he called Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, to ask that the Atlantic Ocean be renamed on Google Maps as “Trump Ocean” or “America Ocean.”

“Sundar, I’m thinking about the Atlantic Ocean, can you take care of it?”

Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally at Clemson University’s T. Ed Garrison Arena in Pendleton, South Carolina, where he recounted telling Pichai, “Sundar, I’m thinking about the Atlantic Ocean. Can you take care of that?”

Trump said Pichai replied, “No, no, no. Not this time. The oceans are different, sir. As you know, they cover a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that,” and Trump said he would likely drop the idea.

Trump also said he would likely keep the Atlantic Ocean’s name, telling the crowd, “I’ll probably pass. I think we’re going to keep the Atlantic Ocean.”

Google’s refusal and context

Trump said Google told him it could not rename the Atlantic because oceans span multiple countries, and he recounted that Pichai said, “Oceans are different, sir. You know, they cover a lot of countries.”

Trump framed the episode as a contrast with earlier changes he said Google made after his requests, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America for US users.

Business Insider said Trump told the crowd he had spoken with Pichai about making the change on Google Maps, and it said Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hindustan Times said there was “no immediate independent confirmation of Trump's account from Google or Pichai,” while it also described Trump’s remarks that he would likely abandon the proposal and keep the Atlantic Ocean’s name.

Broader naming push

Trump said he also proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a “strategic passage” and saying that before the war between the U.S. and Iran, “20% of the world’s oil flowed.” Trump’s remarks came as both Tehran and Washington insisted they control the shipping lane where, in recent weeks, “several tankers and other cargo ships have been targeted,” according to 20Minutos.

“Google has not publicly confirmed that the conversation took place.”
Newsweek

Newsweek said Trump told supporters he asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai to suggest renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean the “Trump Ocean,” and it said Google rejected the idea because oceans border multiple countries. USA Today said Trump floated renaming the Atlantic Ocean the “American Ocean” during a campaign rally in South Carolina, and it said Trump said Google refused the name change.
