President Donald Trump demanded that Senate Majority Leader John Thune cancel the Senate’s upcoming August break until senators pass the SAVE America Act, even as Republicans lack the votes to advance it.

Trump wrote on social media that “John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act,” and he also urged “TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER.”
Thune responded Monday by telling reporters he would be supportive of cancelling the break if there was a path forward, saying “We voted on it one, two, three, four, five times already,” and “Show me how this ends. What’s the picture of victory at the end?”
The dispute centers on the Senate’s 53-47 Republican majority and the filibuster threshold that requires 60 votes for most legislation in the 100-member chamber, with the August recess scheduled to start on Aug. 7.
Thune weighs the math
Thune said he’s willing to cancel the recess only if there’s a chance of a successful outcome, warning that procedural votes could waste senators’ time with “endless quorum calls” and hours spent reading through the Senate’s roster of names while the floor sits empty.
The Hill reported that Trump demanded Thune keep the Senate in session through August to force debate and votes on the SAVE America Act, which would need 60 votes to pass, and it noted that “not a single Democrat has voted for the legislation.”
Fox News described the political pressure on Thune as Trump wanting the bill passed “by any means necessary,” while Thune told Fox News Digital that “It’s still likely to be a 60-vote exercise.”
The Hill also quoted Thune quipping to the Capitol press corps, “Ahhh, do you guys want to be here in August?” as he acknowledged some GOP colleagues could benefit from returning home to campaign ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

The fight threatens to complicate the Senate’s final legislative sprint before the August recess, which is scheduled to begin on Aug. 7 and is described as a pivotal stretch for senators to return home and campaign ahead of the midterm elections.

The Hill reported that several Republican senators, including Susan Collins, Dan Sullivan, and Jon Husted, could benefit from returning home to campaign, while it also noted that objections to adjourning could be overridden if 60 senators vote to leave town.
In the same coverage, Thune said “We’re going to have some conversations over the course of the next couple of days,” and he warned that without a path to an outcome, the Senate could be stuck in procedural activity rather than producing results.
