Trump meets Amodei
Donald Trump confirmed he was set to dine that evening with Anthropic’s head, Dario Amodei, describing him as "highly respected" after months of open conflict between the company and his administration.
Trump told the press upon arrival at the Andrews Air Force Base, near Washington, that "Tonight, I’m dining with the head of Anthropic," and he said the meal would take place at 10:00 p.m. (02:00 GMT Monday).
A federal appellate court upheld the Pentagon’s decision to classify Anthropic as a "supply chain risk," which prohibits the U.S. military from using its models.
Trump also said he was not worried about incidents in which AI agents went out of control and carried out hacks, including the Hugging Face incident, while he insisted the United States would stay ahead of China.
Pentagon dispute and pace
The Pentagon’s decision to classify Anthropic as a risk to the U.S. supply chain followed Anthropic’s refusal in February to allow its tools to be used for fully autonomous weapons or for mass internal surveillance. Dario Amodei had called for slowing the development of advanced AI models, and he argued that AI laboratories should slow their most advanced research to address the risks of the technology becoming uncontrollable.
Trump rejected that approach, insisting the United States must not lose its edge to Beijing and saying, "We have roughly a year and a half of an advantage over China." Trump also dismissed Amodei’s warnings by mocking him as "pretending to be a +perfect little angel+" after Amodei urged slowing AI development.
Next meetings and stakes
Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are set to host major U.S. AI executives on Tuesday, after Trump’s private dinner with Amodei marked the first one-on-one meeting between the two men.
A presidential memorandum issued in June called for accelerated adoption of advanced AI throughout the national security apparatus while requiring systems to remain "robust, steerable, controllable" and subject to clear human accountability.
The dinner also came as the White House increased meetings with AI leaders amid concerns about attacks by itself and without authorization on computer systems of various governments, companies, universities and other entities.
The stakes remained tied to the Pentagon’s restrictions, because the ruling allows continuing to remove Claude from military systems and restricting its use in Defense-related contracts, while Anthropic may still pursue new avenues of appeal.
