President Donald Trump confirmed that after a trip last month in Turkey he slipped away from Air Force One because the Secret Service and military wanted him on a “different plane” due to a threat he insisted didn’t scare him.

The operation involved Trump stowing away in an airport catering container to sneak onto another plane while Air Force One was sent into the sky as a decoy, and Trump said, “They wanted me to go on a different flight, different plane.”
The BBC said the revelation came after reports that Trump boarded Air Force One on 8 July before hiding in a catering truck to be transported to a military aircraft, and it said officials told CBS News the US had detected a credible Iranian threat to fire a missile at the plane.
The Guardian described the same episode as a “stunning charade” in which more than a hundred aides, officials and reporters were kept onboard to fly towards Britain without being told there was a threat to their lives.
In the reporting, Trump said he boarded the presidential jet in front of television cameras in Ankara, then was moved via catering truck to a smaller C-32A aircraft, and he later returned to the Qatari-donated Boeing 747 to fly back to Washington.

Trump told reporters after returning from an event in Ohio that he “just have to do what they say,” and he said he didn’t ask too much about the threat because “I get a lot of threats.”
ABC News reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were on the “decoy” Air Force One, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was on the other plane flying with the president.
The New York Times said some of Trump’s top officials traveled on the original Air Force One while Trump secretly disembarked, and it reported that Rubio and Bessent were on that plane along with Stephen Miller and Steven Cheung.
The Guardian quoted Steven Cash saying, “It appears that the idea was we can reduce the danger to President Trump by offering up 100 or so people to be killed by the Iranians in his place,” as Democrats pressed for a congressional briefing.
Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator for Connecticut, called the operation “unprecedented and surreal” and “downright scary” on CNN, while Ned Price said the administration had perpetuated an “outright lie” for weeks and turned reporters into “unwitting conspirators.”
Aftermath and political pressure
The Guardian said the deception was sufficiently elaborate that journalists traveling with the president—and some White House staff—believed Trump remained onboard Air Force One, with reporters instructed to keep the shades over their windows closed during the flight.

It also said the C-32A carrying Trump flew to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, arriving at about 10.20pm, while the older Air Force One and the travelling press pool arrived minutes later.
Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he was at “greater risk” on the secret flight than the decoy Air Force One, saying, “I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk,” and he added that it was the plane he believed “they would be more likely to go for.”
The White House had publicly said Trump would fly to Britain onboard Air Force One, albeit an older version, and the Guardian said the president boarded the presidential jet in full view of television cameras before being spirited away minutes later.
In the same coverage, the BBC said Trump previously described himself as Iran’s “number one target” during the summit in Ankara, and it reported that the clandestine manoeuvre came a day after the US renewed military strikes on Iran following a breakdown of negotiations between Washington and Tehran to end the war.
