President Donald Trump secretly swapped planes while leaving Turkey after an Iranian assassination threat, according to The Washington Post and as described by Forbes.

Forbes said Trump was taken to an Air Force Boeing C-32A plane after boarding the older Air Force One jet, and that the old plane served as a “decoy” because of the swap.
France 24 reported the operation was prompted by an Iranian assassination threat against Trump and that the ruse was carried out as journalists and some White House staff members were led to believe they were on the same plane as the president.
CBS News said U.S. intelligence detected a credible plot to fire a missile at the plane Trump was on as he left Ankara, and that he was whisked to another plane with the help of an airport catering truck shortly before Air Force One took off.
Cheung defends, critics react
White House communications director Steven Cheung defended the decision by saying, “The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the President and his staff.”
CNN reported that when Trump was asked about the secret plane switch, Cheung told the network the aircraft was safeguarded, while the reporting focused on journalists and staff who were unknowingly aboard a decoy plane.
CBS News said multiple Trump administration officials expressed frustration that highly classified tactics and procedures leaked into the public eye, potentially limiting future protective operations for U.S. presidents.
Forbes quoted Democratic Party consultant David Axelrod criticizing the White House’s use of the old plane as a decoy with journalists on board, saying, “Everyone on that plane was a decoy.”
Security questions ahead
The reporting tied the secrecy to the broader debate over the Qatar-gifted Air Force One’s security capabilities, with Forbes noting Trump said the plane would undergo another set of upgrades and to get its security capabilities “maxed out.”

France 24 said Trump had flown to the NATO summit in a new Qatari-gifted and retrofitted jet, but that ahead of departing Turkey he said he would fly partway home on an older-model baby blue Air Force One plane instead.
ABC News reported that on the flight believed to be carrying Trump, reporters were told the windows needed to be closed the whole flight and that it was a mandate from the Secret Service.
The Guardian said the operation involved hiding Trump in an airport catering container and that journalists were advised to keep their window shades in the press cabin closed, while it also described Cheung’s statement that the Qatari-donated jet had been fitted with high-level security protocols.

How was the deception managed? In Ankara, Trump arrived in a limousine and walked up the staircase of the old Air Force One, a blue-and-white Boeing 747 that had served as the presidential aircraft before the new aircraft donated by Qatar came on the scene. The president saluted the cameras and entered the aircraft in full view of the world. The staging, however, was part of the deception. While White House press corps members began to board from the rear of the aircraft, Trump and several aides exited on the other side. To avoid being seen, they used an airport catering truck, one of the vehicles typically used to load food and supplies onto aircraft. The vehicle positioned itself beside the airframe and carried the group to a waiting C-32A just a short distance away. The C-32A is a modified Boeing 757 used by the U.S. Air Force to transport senior government officials. That day, however, it assumed an exceptional role: transporting the president without the press or much of the White House staff realizing it was there. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also boarded the C-32A in full view of everyone, helping to give the operation an appearance of normalcy. The deception continued during the flight. The aircraft carrying Trump used the military identifier Reach 18, and the systems that publicly track the aircraft would have been turned off. Simultaneously, the old Air Force One took off with the journalists and other members of the presidential entourage. Initially, it had no identifier, but later appeared in tracking systems with the code AF1, that is, Air Force One, even though Trump was no longer traveling on it. The maneuver had a clear objective: to turn Air Force One into a lure while the president traveled on another aircraft. The journalists, who believed they were traveling with Trump, were not informed of the change of aircraft or of the specific threat against the president. In addition, White House staff asked them to keep the window blinds down for security reasons. The two aircraft arrived in the United Kingdom hours apart. Trump reappeared in front of the cameras, getting off the old Air Force One, as if he had completed the journey on that aircraft. Soon after, he boarded the new Air Force One, the Boeing donated by Qatar, to continue the trip to Washington. During the voyage, Trump spoke with the journalists about the Iranian threat, but did not reveal that he had just starred in a clandestine operation. When asked why they had been forced to lower the blinds as they departed Turkey, the president replied that they were probably on a “dangerous flight” with the “villains” with whom the United States must deal. Trump asserted that he is threatened “all the time” and that he is at the top of Iran’s list. The case shows to what extent presidential security officials regarded the Iranian threat as serious. But it also reveals the reach of the deception operation: to protect Trump, the White House concealed his whereabouts even from people in his own circle and maintained for hours the fiction that Air Force One was transporting the president.
