Third carrier, more troops
The Pentagon is sending a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East and adding 9,000 to 10,000 more U.S. troops to the region, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The USS Theodore Roosevelt left its home port of San Diego on Sunday for a scheduled deployment, and the deployment is expected to bring three carrier strike groups for the first time since April if the USS George Washington stays after the Roosevelt arrives. The Al Jazeera report said a US official told it that the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group left its San Diego base on Sunday, bound for the region, followed by the Makin Island Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) the next day carrying more than 2,000 Marines.A
The official expected that by the end of November, three aircraft carriers and two amphibious landing groups would be positioned near Iran. The Global Times report said the ships, jet fighters, Marines and sailors will arrive in the region by the end of November, citing U.S. officials.

Trump ties it to Iran
President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that Iran "won't exist any longer" unless it signs "a very fair deal," renewing his threats amid stalled negotiations. Trump told Time magazine in an interview published on the same day that it's "possible" that he will ramp up bombing against Iran after the midterm elections. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said forces are "ready to go" should Trump order new attacks, as Al Jazeera reported the Pentagon is not planning to withdraw any assets even if an agreement with Iran is reached.A
The goal of the deployment is to keep military options "on the table" for Trump regardless of how diplomacy unfolds. The Guardian reported that Trump raised the prospects of new strikes in a Time magazine interview, saying it is “possible” that he will ramp up bombing in Iran after the 3 November midterm elections.T

Force posture and political stakes
The new deployment, which includes F-35 fighter jets, will add to the roughly 50,000 U.S. service members already stationed in the region. The Guardian reported that the group of ships now en route to the Middle East together carry more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, and it said the move could bring the U.S. naval presence to more than 20,000 sailors and Marines. TThe Pentagon is not currently planning to withdraw any assets even if an agreement with Iran is reached, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said forces are "ready to go".
The Guardian said the Washington was moved to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose crew was at sea for more than 260 days straight. TTrump said “It’s possible” the increasingly unpopular war would threaten Republican party chances in November, and then he added “It should help, because Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.”
