State dinner, big guest list
President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House for a lavish state dinner in the East Room on Thursday evening, with Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan as guests of honor. Trump and first lady Melania Trump hosted the Chinese delegation as both leaders were expected to deliver remarks, and the guest list included tech and industry leaders such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla and SpaceX leader Elon Musk, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Michael Dell. Xi and his wife were scheduled to join Trump and Melania Trump for a private tea and a tour of the National Archives on Friday, and Xi was expected to depart the U.S. later Friday.
Trump and Xi met for about 90 minutes behind closed doors earlier Thursday, and the leaders were expected to discuss issues including artificial intelligence safety, Taiwan, trade, the Iran war, and critical minerals during their bilateral meeting. Trump told the room that he and Xi had forged a friendship, saying, "From the time of my first election in 2016, President Xi and I have forged a friendship, a truly great friendship, actually, built on mutual respect and the vital interests of our people," while Xi thanked Trump for "warm hospitality" and said, "there is plenty of room for us to work together."
Rhetoric shifts, same tensions
Trump’s rhetoric toward Xi and China shifted sharply from earlier years, and Al Jazeera highlighted examples including Trump’s 2012 post that said, "No surprise that China was caught cheating in the Olympics." Al Jazeera also cited Trump’s later language about China as an "enemy" in 2015, quoting his book, "Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again," which said, "there are people who wish I wouldn’t refer to China as our enemy." During Thursday’s state dinner, Trump called Xi and his wife "truly outstanding, amazing people" and said the U.S. and China should "continue to build a relationship that promotes prosperity and security."
Xi said the two sides had "reached common understanding on many issues" and framed the relationship as "strategic stability," while the New York Times described the day as pomp that masked divides over artificial intelligence and trade. Xi also warned that competition should be kept within bounds, saying, "It should be a race of catching up with one another, not a wrestle in which one either wins or loses," as the meeting continued to center on trade and AI.
Trade truce, AI guardrails
The leaders’ public agenda centered on trade and artificial intelligence, and Reuters said the U.S. secured an extension of the trade truce by two months, with Scott Bessent stating the two sides agreed to extend by two months a trade agreement due to expire in November.

Reuters reported that Bessent said Beijing was meeting a requirement to buy 25 million tons of soybeans but was lagging on a pledge to buy $17 billion in other agricultural goods, while rare-earth deliveries were also falling short.
Xi pressed Trump on Taiwan, and Reuters reported that Xi hoped the United States would "handle the Taiwan question with prudence" and oppose Taiwan independence.
On AI, Reuters said Trump argued for leaving AI "exactly where it is" and relying on the U.S. Department of Justice rather than impose new guardrails, while Xi said, "We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good, and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control."
The New York Times said Mr. Trump planned to discuss security and "super intelligence," and it quoted Xi’s call to keep AI "always under human control" as the summit’s core contentions remained unresolved behind the ceremonies.
