Trump’s Great American State Fair Draws Light Crowds After Performer Withdrawals on National Mall

President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair, billed as a “World’s Fair-scale celebration” of the nation’s 250th birthday, opened on the National Mall and has drawn light crowds with no official attendance figures released.

The 16-day Freedom 250 event is scheduled through July 10 and features booths representing all 56 states and territories, federal agency displays, a Ferris wheel, military events, and nightly entertainment between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument.

Organizers said the fair’s grounds were closed early on Friday, June 26, and a Vanilla Ice performance was canceled after “inclement weather in the area.”

The fair reopened over the weekend with visitors walking through state exhibits, food booths, and federal displays despite rain and humid weather, while NBC News reported that more than a dozen attendees said they did not feel politics had overtaken the event once they were inside.

The centerpiece has also been marked by performer withdrawals, including a Truth Social order from Trump for remaining acts to “stay home,” with the opening event instead featuring himself, Lee Greenwood, tenor Christopher Macchio, and military ensembles.

White House staff are reportedly concerned that Trump’s Fourth of July rally could be a “recipe for disaster” after the Great American State Fair’s low turnout, with multiple sources telling CNN that the president’s Saturday rally may also be a dud.

CNN reported that the lackluster attendance for Trump’s speech on the mall last week infuriated him behind the scenes and sparked fears of a similarly disappointing turnout for the Independence Day celebration.

The rally is scheduled outside on the National Mall, with temperatures in Washington forecast to reach a stifling 100 degrees, and CNN said there would likely be large groups of people who reserved tickets but don’t end up attending.

A White House official told CNN, “I do not understand why we are doing this so late,” adding there were still ongoing efforts to fix the timing.

The New Republic said the rally will be punctuated by a massive fireworks display currently scheduled to begin at 11 p.m., and noted that unlike in past years, attendees will not be able to bring coolers to beat the heat.

As the Freedom 250 program grows around the July 4 celebration, EL PAÍS said the prominence given to President Donald Trump threatens to turn the event into a political act, with critics pointing to the decision to present the anniversary explicitly as an act associated with his political figure.

EL PAÍS described Trump’s announcement that the main event on the National Mall would include “the most spectacular Trump rally of all,” and said he promised “the largest fireworks display in history.”

RFI reported that Trump announced on Monday plans to hold a large rally in Washington on July 4 to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary, and said the “Tribute to America” event would be held “at the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.”

RFI also quoted Trump’s Truth Social post promising that “this enormous celebration will honor the people of our country,” and said he promoted the June 24 celebration as the “start” of “our celebration that will last all summer.”

In the background of the fair’s troubles and crowd-size disputes, CNN said Trump’s July Fourth address follows days of scattered crowds and setbacks at the “Great American State Fair,” as White House officials braced for an underwhelming showing amid triple-digit heat and a schedule running well into Saturday night.
