Unidentified Attacker Plants Explosive at U.S. Embassy Entrance in Oslo; Oslo Police Investigate Possible Terrorism
Blast at U.S. embassy Oslo
An explosive blast occurred at the entrance to the U.S. embassy's consular section in Oslo at around 01:00 local time, causing only minor property damage and no injuries.
“The explosion that occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the United States embassy in Oslo, where there were no casualties but there was minor property damage, may have been caused by "an act of terrorism," according to police, who did not rule out other possible hypotheses”
Multiple outlets reported shattered glass, cracks in a thick glass door, black scorch marks and damage to a guard booth and visa office.

They described the building as closed while authorities inspected the site.
Police and security response
Norwegian police and the national security service immediately mobilized substantial resources to investigate.
Officers established a large police presence, deployed dogs, drones and helicopters, examined security-camera footage, and searched the area overnight for possible perpetrators.
Investigators emphasized the probe is in its early stages and said they must remain open to multiple explanations as they analyse remnants of the device and images released to the public.
Backpack device investigation
Authorities have publicly circulated security camera images and described evidence consistent with an improvised explosive device carried in a backpack.

They said the precise explosive type has not been definitively confirmed and some officials said they cannot yet rule out other causes.
A U.S. official told at least one outlet that an incendiary device concealed in a backpack detonated, which contrasts with the uncertainty noted by other officials.
Police have explicitly ruled out a hand grenade and continue to analyse remnants.
Diplomatic response to incident
Norwegian government ministers and U.S. diplomatic officials were quickly informed and described the incident as unacceptable while stressing investigations are ongoing.
Norway’s foreign minister and justice minister were reported to be in contact with the U.S. chargé d’affaires, and the case is being handled jointly by local police and the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST).

Investigation and threat level
Investigators are treating terrorism as one line of inquiry while explicitly keeping an open mind.
“"One hypothesis is that it was a terrorist act, but we are not focusing solely on that lead”
Authorities said there is currently no confirmed link to broader Middle East conflicts despite a heightened alert for U.S. diplomatic sites amid regional tensions.

Norway’s national threat level remained unchanged at 3 on a 5-point scale.
Some outlets connected the heightened protection of embassies and sensitive sites to recent escalations involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
