Strikes, Strait Dispute
The United States launched another wave of strikes on Iran that began at 2100 GMT on Sunday, after Central Command said it had earlier announced approximately 140 strikes the previous night.

On Sunday evening, Iranian state media reported at least 10 “enemy projectiles” hitting Qeshm Island, and it also reported strikes on the island of Farur that it said killed a telecommunications worker and wounded two others.

Tehran said it had targeted two ships in Hormuz early Sunday, including the one that caught fire, while the US military said it began launching more strikes at 5 pm ET on Sunday “to continue degrading their ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait of Hormuz.”
The renewed violence put an interim US-Iranian agreement signed last month “in jeopardy,” with Iran saying early on Monday that the latest attacks had “rendered futile” all the diplomatic efforts of the last few months.
The BBC reported that the US insisted the Strait of Hormuz is open despite Iran saying it has closed the waterway amid renewed strikes, and it said hostilities flared again after the US struck more than 140 targets across Iran.
Voices and Accusations
In a phone interview with Reuters on Sunday afternoon, Trump referred to the weekend’s US strikes on Iran, saying, “We’re beating them up,” as the BBC described Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launching wide-ranging attacks on US bases and allies across the region on Sunday.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the US attacks “rendered futile” diplomacy and accused Washington of causing “the return of insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and disruption of international commercial shipping” by openly interfering in Iran’s arrangements.
The BBC reported that Qatar, a mediator in ceasefire talks, had not been attacked since April, while the UAE had not been attacked since May, and it said Centcom announced another round of strikes that would “continue degrading their ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
In response to the renewed exchange, the BBC said Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of violating the deal, while Trump said talks would still continue and mediators were trying to revive the process.
The BBC also quoted Centcom’s position that the IRGC “blatantly attacked” a Cyprus-flagged vessel that was “unable to continue its journey” due to damage to the engine room, with a crew member missing.
What’s at Risk Next
The BBC said the renewed fire “put in jeopardy” an interim ceasefire agreement signed last month aimed to reopen the Strait and eventually bring a permanent end to the conflict, and it described Trump declaring the Iranian attacks meant the ceasefire was over while Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of violating the deal.
CNN reported that Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned US military attacks over the previous 24 hours, accusing Washington of violating international law and warning neighboring countries not to assist any military action against Iran, while it also quoted the ministry’s claim that the US had committed “some of the most heinous acts of war crimes.”
CNN said the US Central Command announced fresh strikes intended to continue undermining Iran’s ability to attack civilian sailors and commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and it described the channel as key to Tehran’s leverage in negotiations.
In parallel, CNN reported that Iranian official media reported explosions late Sunday in Jask, Qeshm, Bandar Abbas and Sirik in Hormozgan province, and it said Hormozgan Governorate Public Relations Office told IRIB that no civilian casualties or damage to infrastructure were reported so far.
DW reported that Iran reacted to the latest round of US strikes by saying they have “rendered futile” the diplomatic efforts of the past few months, while it also said the US military said the strikes were to “continue degrading” Iran’s ability to attack commercial ships going through the Strait of Hormuz.
