Tariffs, aid, and accusations
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs have driven up costs for American families and upended a decades-old trade relationship as he unveiled a $6.2 billion plan to shield Canada’s manufacturing heartland.
Carney said he spoke with Trump for “quite some time” about issues including trade, while the U.S. Embassy in Canada accused Canadian politicians of seeking to influence American politics ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected suggestions of improper interference, and Ford said “No matter what happens in the midterms, no matter who sits in the White House, we’re not going back to the way things were.”
Carney and Ford announced the 8.7 billion Canadian dollar ($6.2 billion) plan to support steelmakers, automakers and critical mineral development in Ontario, including CA$5.2 billion ($3.7 billion) over five years for steelmakers and CA$2.5 billion ($1.8 billion) for automakers.
The U.S. Embassy also issued a fact sheet accusing Canadian politicians of seeking to interfere in American elections, and the embassy singled out Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Ford for statements tied to retaliatory tariffs and a Ronald Reagan advertisement.
Election meddling dispute
The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa said Canadian leaders have brushed off concerns over "potential interference" and that ministers and premiers "openly describe plans to influence American politics in official documents and public appearances."
Carney told reporters that “We've responded to those to protect Canadian jobs, to protect Canadian companies and develop our economy,” after the embassy alleged Canadian interference in U.S. elections.
Ford said he has "no interest at all" in interfering in American elections, and he added that “The people of the United States will make that determination in the midterms.”
The U.S. Embassy’s fact sheet cited comments and actions including meetings with U.S. Democrats and calling for retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., and it also pointed to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly’s response: "That's exactly why I'm meeting so many governors and potential presidential candidates."
CBC also described a separate U.S. crackdown on non-citizen voting, with the U.S. Department of Justice saying it has arrested more than 200 people since the beginning of 2026 for illegally voting as noncitizens in past elections.
What is at stake next
The dispute is tied to the November 3 midterm elections, which the BBC said will determine which political party controls both branches of the U.S. Congress and could affect the rest of Donald Trump’s presidency.
“American officials are ‘closely watching’ Canadian politicians for signs of election interference.”
The U.S. Embassy’s fact sheet also accused Canada of being dismissive of the allegations, and it warned that “Americans decide America’s elections.”
Carney said Canada was responding to U.S. tariffs, while Ford said “Tariffs make both our industries weaker and reduce choice for our families,” as Canadian auto exports to the U.S. fell more than 10% and U.S. exports to Canada dropped more than 20%.
The Globe and Mail reported that U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra warned American officials are “closely watching” Canadian politicians for signs of election interference, and Hoekstra said political ads run by Ontario could be interpreted as political interference.
The U.S. Embassy also cited Canadians charged with illegally voting in U.S. elections between 2012 and 2024, and CBC said the embassy claimed Canada has the second-highest number of its citizens facing fraudulent or illegal voting charges of any country.
