Six months of escalation
Reuters said the war President Donald Trump described as a “short trip” has become a crisis that threatens to undermine his presidency, with Iran not yielding and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remaining highly disrupted.

Reuters also said there is “no clear path to end the conflict,” and noted that six months after the outbreak it has produced consequences including a drop in Trump’s approval rating from 40% to 33% since the conflict began.
In Rochester, N.Y., WHAM reported that Tommy Mach, a Fairport resident and retired Marine, said he was in Abu Dhabi on a business trip when things “suddenly became serious,” and he later described waiting for a flight while hearing “explosions above an airport.”
Mach said six months later he is frustrated the war is still ongoing and he “hope[s] that it ends quickly,” while WHAM reported that local business owner Pouya Seifzadeh said, “This is not a regime that you can trust.”
Strikes, sanctions, and threats
As the conflict entered its sixth month, Reuters reported that the readiness of the U.S. military declined, saying that a May report from the Congressional Research Service stated that 42 U.S. military aircraft were lost in the conflict.
In the same Reuters framing, the agency said Iran was targeted but not defeated and that Tehran can still launch attacks and keep the Hormuz Strait under closure.
In the U.S. narrative of renewed action, 6abc Philadelphia reported that “The U.S. military hit targets in Iran on Tuesday and Tehran fired missiles and drones in response,” after a U.S. strike hit a home hosting a wedding, killing two people and wounding dozens.
Trump warned on social media that “If the failed Nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level,” while 6abc Philadelphia reported that U.S. Central Command said the latest strikes were in response to Tehran trying to attack commercial ships and American forces in the Middle East.

Reuters said the war has shaken the global economy and raised concerns about a global recession, while also describing a destabilization of the Middle East where the aim of the American-Israeli war was to remove Iran’s threat but analysts say it made the region less safe.

Reuters also said Iran may take longer to produce a nuclear weapon after American and Israeli attacks during a previous assault in June 2025 and in the first phase of the current war caused substantial damage to three well-known Iranian uranium enrichment facilities and sites suspected of conducting weapon-related activities.
In the U.S. domestic political stakes described by 6abc Philadelphia, the renewed fighting followed others on Sunday that “abruptly ended a month without military action” and threatened to fully reignite a conflict that has “posed political problems for Republicans in November's midterm congressional elections.”
6abc Philadelphia reported that the renewed fighting comes after Trump appeared to pivot toward trying to bend Iran to his will through economic sanctions, and it said a return to open conflict would be dangerous for the region where Iran has targeted U.S. military bases and infrastructure in Gulf countries since the war began.
