The departure of the butcher. Named in February 2024 to replace the very popular Valeri Zaluzhny, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, 60, never enjoyed the same aura as his predecessor with the public and the soldiers. The man, however, played a prominent role in several of Ukraine's initial military successes, including the defense of Kyiv in spring 2022 and the spectacular Kharkiv counter-offensive a few months later. But his name remained associated with the long and bloody battles of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, which earned him in some circles the nickname the butcher. His detractors also reproached him for a "Russian-style" command culture, vertical and inflexible, as well as decisions that led to human losses deemed excessive. In his farewell message, the former commander-in-chief defended his record, notably claiming that Ukrainian forces had retaken 743 km² of territory since the start of the year. "My job is war," he wrote, adding that he would continue to serve his country. Protests across the country. His replacement may perhaps end the political crisis triggered a week ago by the dismissal of the very popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. This decision immediately provoked protests across the country and exposed the tensions that undermine the Ukrainian military apparatus. Former Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov had sought to transpose to Defense the methods that had made his reputation: systematic data collection, evaluation of units and equipment based on their results, greater transparency, and massive use of new technologies. A more modern method, in short, difficult to reconcile with the structures and mentalities of the traditional military institution. Before his departure, he revealed having asked Volodymyr Zelensky to replace Oleksandr Syrskyi, accusing the commander-in-chief of having impeded some of his reforms. The choice to replace Syrskyi with Mykhailo Drapatyi therefore resembles a step back for the Ukrainian president. Drapatyi, conversely, is one of the officers most receptive to this modernization. Generation change. This also testifies to a generational shift. Born in 1982, Mykhailo Drapatyi belongs to a category of officers whose career and reputation were forged in the war against Russia rather than the Soviet-era institutions. In May 2014, when he was a major in the 72nd mechanized brigade, he had made himself known to the public by driving his armored vehicle through a barricade erected by pro-Russian separatists in Mariupol, to clear the way for his men. Filmed, the images had made Mykhailo Drapatyi a patriotic symbol during the early weeks of the war in Donbas. The young officer later took part in several of the conflict's most difficult episodes, notably Debaltseve. After Russia's February 2022 invasion, he was sent successively to several critical front sectors. In 2024, he had been tasked notably with stabilizing the situation in the Kharkiv region after another Russian offensive. This good reputation also stems from an unusual episode in an institution where senior officials tend to shirk responsibility in case of failure. In 2025, while commanding the ground forces, Mykhailo Drapatyi announced his resignation after a deadly Russian strike against a Ukrainian training ground. "These are soldiers, young men, most of whom were in a shelter. They should have learned, lived and fought, and not died," he wrote, referring to his "personal responsibility" in the tragedy. Volodymyr Zelensky ultimately chose to keep him within the high command, entrusting him with the direction of joint forces. This attitude has contributed to his popularity within the army, where he is described as a commander close to the field and able to listen to his subordinates. "We wanted Fedorov back." The nomination alone will not solve the problems the Ukrainian army faces. After more than four years of war, the armed forces still lack manpower; mobilization remains politically explosive; the quality of training varies greatly by unit, and rotations remain difficult to implement across several front sectors. This should not be enough to restore Volodymyr Zelensky's image. Many Ukrainians are waiting, again and always, for the return of the sacked defense minister. "People mobilized to support Fedorov. Syrskyi was sidelined, but Fedorov has not been reinstated. The objective has therefore not been achieved," grinds from Kyiv, Oleg, 64, who did not wish to give his last name. The same sentiment in the garrison town of Izium, in the Kharkiv region, where soldiers bitterly regret the former defense minister, who "set up contracts so that mobilized soldiers know at least how long they will have to serve."

Zelensky reshuffles command

President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi as his replacement after days of protests tied to the earlier dismissal of defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

In Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, demonstrators chanted “Drapati! Drapati! Drapati!” as Zelensky responded to street demands by announcing Sirski’s dismissal and Drapati’s appointment.

AFP reported that Ukrainian soldiers and civilians in Izium welcomed Drapatyi’s appointment in the fifth year of Russia’s invasion, while still hoping for the return of Fedorov.

France 24 said the surprise replacement followed the removal of Fedorov last week and that Zelensky sacked Syrsky on Tuesday, replacing him with Drapaty.

The reshuffle also came as protesters demanded the removal of Syrskyi and the reinstatement of Fedorov, with the crisis framed as the biggest domestic challenge Zelensky has faced since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

Soldiers split on Syrskyi

In Izium, a 22-year-old soldier using the nickname Khrest told AFP that Syrsky’s departure was a “good thing” but he still wanted Fedorov to return to government.

Khrest said Fedorov was lobbying for “the widespread introduction of fixed-term contracts,” adding that mobilised soldiers were fighting without a set term even though the war is in its fifth year.

Another Izium soldier, nicknamed “Ananas,” told AFP he was pleased to see Syrsky removed despite Syrsky’s reputation for success, saying Syrsky “threw a lot of people into the meat grinder at the start of the war”.

Ananas also alleged Syrsky had been linked to a scandal over reports of violence against new recruits in the Skelia assault unit, while Syrsky called the violations “shameful” and said measures had been taken against those responsible.

In Kyiv, a 69-year-old Oleg told AFP that the removal of Syrsky was not enough, saying “People got together to support Fedorov... the aim has not yet been achieved.”

Reform hopes and risks

The political crisis centered on whether Zelensky could satisfy demands for military reform while avoiding further divisions, with AFP describing crowds pushing for Fedorov’s reinstatement and Syrsky’s removal.

France 24 reported that Zelensky indicated that “il a été déterminé comment la structure de l’état-major général des forces armées d’Ukraine devait être réorganisée,” framing the reshuffle as a reorganization of the General Staff.

The European Conservative said Drapatyi, described as a 43-year-old frontline commander, pledged to lead the armed forces “responsibly” while thanking Syrskyi for his service, and it said Zelensky offered Fedorov another senior government position.

International Business Times UK said Syrskiy is at the centre of the biggest domestic crisis Zelensky has faced since Russia’s full-scale invasion began, with protesters demanding his removal after a defence minister he clashed with was sacked.

Kyiv Post reported that Anastasiia Starodubtseva, 25, said she and other protesters would stay “until something changes,” while Zelensky was portrayed as holding meetings with top advisors and military hierarchy and weighing whether to bring back Fedorov and the fate of Syrsky.
