West Yorkshire Police said a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and of being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control in a public place causing injury, and the dog was seized by authorities.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Cox of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said, “Sadly, a man has died and it is really important that we understand the circumstances of what has taken place.”

Appeals for Sophie and witnesses

Across coverage, police appealed for witnesses after two people stopped to assist the injured man and direct officers, with one of them named Sophie.

The BBC reported that West Yorkshire Police appealed for “two people, one of whom is called Sophie, who stopped to help the injured man to come forward,” while Sky News said officers were urging “these two women to come forward to help us with our ongoing enquiries into this tragic incident.”

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Cox said the initial altercation happened in an area used by walkers and urged anyone who had seen or heard any part of the exchange between the two men to contact detectives.

Custody, seized dog, and next steps

West Yorkshire Police said the 55-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody, and officers confirmed that a dog understood to have been involved in the incident has been seized.
