Trump vs CNN in Oval Office
President Donald Trump berated CNN correspondent Kristen Holmes during an Oval Office event on Monday, Aug. 17, telling her “Be quiet! Be quiet! Be quiet! You’re a fake reporter and you report fake news.”
“Be quiet! Be quiet! Be quiet! You’re a fake reporter and you report fake news.”
The confrontation unfolded as Trump hosted teenage lifeguard Ryder Williams and the 10-year-old boy he rescued, Nathaniel Rai, after the rescue in California became viral.

Holmes asked Trump about North Korea and whether Kim Jong Un had requested he “scale back” U.S. military exercises with South Korea, and Trump responded by ordering her to stop and then speaking over her.
The White House’s rapid response account later escalated the clash on X, posting that Holmes’s question was “disgusting and inhumane” and that her children would be “sickened and embarrassed.”
CNN and White House trade barbs
CNN defended Holmes in a statement that said she is “one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House,” and that she “did her job and asked the President of the United States a tough, relevant, and newsworthy question.”
The network also said “personal attacks on journalists for asking questions are not befitting the office,” and insisted it “stand[s] firmly behind Kristen and reject[s] these attacks in the strongest possible terms.”

The White House rapid response account, meanwhile, told Holmes that “Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question,” adding that they would be “sickened and embarrassed.”
In parallel coverage, The Independent described the escalation as the administration “invoking a White House correspondent’s children” after Holmes asked a question about Trump’s decision to pull back from U.S. and South Korea military drills.
Natalie Harp and the wider fight
The exchange also centered on Holmes asking Trump to respond to remarks by Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff about Trump “travel with your aide Natalie Harp and build a ballroom than do your job as president,” which Trump sidestepped in the Oval Office.
“[Democratic Georgia Senator] Jon Ossoff said that you would rather travel with your aide,Natalie Harp and build a ballroom than do your job as president”
Trump later described Ossoff as a “Pee-wee Herman look-alike” and, in the same broader confrontation, accused Holmes of “spreading fake news” while repeatedly telling her to be quiet.
CNN’s reporting on Natalie Harp said she has become a “main conduit between the president and the outside world,” and quoted a White House adviser saying “[Trump] likes the attention and the fact that she is 100% committed and loyal.”
The New York Times said the White House called Holmes’s question “disgusting and inhumane” and that Trump praised Ryder Williams as “a real hero,” while turning to Nathaniel and telling him Holmes was being “disrespectful.”
