Run X begins Oct. 23
World Athletics and Technogym set the RUN X World Treadmill Championship to begin on 23 October at 400 fitness centres across 20 countries, with the qualification phase built around a 5km treadmill challenge. World Athletics says runners can complete their 5km at an official RUN X centre from 23 October, with results certified through treadmills connected to the Technogym Digital Ecosystem and tracked on an online leaderboard. BBC Sport highlighted the format at a qualification event in Southampton, where British marathon runner Charlotte Purdue said, "5km is obviously not too far so people have a shot at it, there's no pressure,".
World Athletics president Lord Coe told BBC Sport that the event is a "great opportunity" to introduce a new audience to running, and Technogym UK education manager Luke Townsend described the 5km mark as "more accessible" for new participants. Morningstar framed the competition as a global event that starts on 23 October in 400 fitness centres across 20 countries, with a prize pool of US$100,000 at stake.
Qualifying window and finals
Runners have until 24 January to complete 5km for free at an official Run X centre, and organisers allow multiple attempts while counting only the best time. World Athletics says five Global Run X Days fall on 24 October, 14 November and 12 December 2026, followed by 16 and 23 January 2027, with affiliated centres able to organise additional local running days. The competition then moves into a regional phase from 30 January to 28 February 2027, before it culminates in a world final at Technogym Village in Cesena, Italy on 20-21 March 2027.
BBC Sport reported that the top 25% of runners in age categories from 18 to 75+ will represent their nation at the regionals, and the 10 best men and women in each category advance to the world finals in Italy next March. Morningstar said World Athletics will award wild card entries to the respective Member Federations of the overall male and female winners for the 5 km race at the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Yangzhou, China.
Ambassadors and winter safety
Technogym and World Athletics positioned RUN X as a way to bring running communities into fitness clubs, and World Athletics named Jimmy Gressier and Sara Hall as ambassadors for the competition. BBC Sport reported that Luke Townsend, education manager at Technogym UK, said organisers hope to include the discipline in Esport competitions in the next five years. She Strides founder Hollie Thackway told BBC Sport that winter safety concerns push women to change their outdoor running routines, and she said, "By being able to run inside on a treadmill, it means you don't have to stop your training".
UA.NEWS said a qualifying event in Southampton, United Kingdom drew participants from different countries to complete a 5 km distance on treadmills for the world champion title and a share of the $100,000 prize fund. World Athletics added that the championship is designed so elite athletes, recreational runners and newcomers can take part in the same global challenge through connected technology and competition on the same 5km distance.
