Yahya takes U23 helm
Yahya Golmohammadi was officially appointed head coach of Iran’s U23 national football team after the Football Federation of Iran announced his appointment hours after his contract termination with Iraqi club Duhok. The Tehran Times said Golmohammadi’s appointment followed the termination of his contract with Iraqi club Duhok, and it described Hossein Abdi as the most recent coach who stepped down after the team’s group-stage elimination at the Nagoya Asian Games.
The Football Federation of Iran also cleared the way for Golmohammadi’s move by reaching an agreement with Duhok FC, and the Sports group of the Khebar News Agency said the contract termination left his path to the U23 bench “cleared.” The appointment came as the under-23 team faced “failure in Olympic competition,” and the Khabar e Daneshjoo report said qualifying for these competitions would be one of the main objectives for the new technical staff.
Coaching record reviewed
The Khabaronline review framed Golmohammadi’s arrival as the start of a new era after Iran’s U-23 football team failed in Nagoya, and it said Hossein Adi resigned from the head coach position before Golmohammadi was introduced. The review traced earlier coaching cycles after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which it said were held in summer 2021 with a one-year delay, and it listed Mehdi Mahdvikia, Reza Enayati, Omidreza Ravankhah, and Hossein Adi as the four coaches who led the team.
The review said Mehdi Mahdvikia was appointed on 9 September 1400 by Azizkhadem, the then president of the Football Federation, and it described his mission as preparing a new generation for Paris 2024. The review also recorded that Iran defeated all three opponents in Tajikistan in the autumn 1400 qualifiers, including Nepal 4-0, Lebanon 2-0, and Tajikistan 3-2, before Iran finished third in the final stage with two points and was eliminated.
Duhok exit and next mission
Duhok’s coaching change unfolded alongside contract disputes, as vananews said the contract between Golmohammadi and Dohuk had been terminated by mutual consent after intensive talks with club managers. vananews also reported that Dohuk’s management set two conditions for consenting to Mohammadreza Soleimani’s departure, including “an official request from Soleimani’s club and payment of a fee as a release clause,” while it noted Varzesh 3 said a final agreement had not yet been reached.
Football 360 said the Football Federation officially announced Golmohammadi’s selection with the headline “A Great and Tripartite Agreement,” and it described the photo of the new national team head coach alongside a member of the federation’s board and one of the officials of the Iraqi club. Football 360 added that Golmohammadi intends to take the under-23 team to the Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles, USA, describing it as “an enormous mission” for Iranian football.
