Escalating violence in the Occupied West Bank requires immediate attention from Parliament and the Foreign Secretary.
A constituent has written to request that this issue be raised in the House rather than treated as a distant news story. The letter asks specifically what the Government is doing in response to Israeli cabinet ministers openly calling for the destruction of Palestinian towns.
Calls for destruction
The urgency stems from statements made by senior Israeli officials. Bezalel Smotrich, the Israeli Finance Minister, stated that just as Rafah, Khan Younis and Gaza were flattened, terror nests in Judea and Samaria must also be flattened.
He explicitly named Bruqin and al-Dik, suggesting they should look like Shujaiya and Tel Sultan. Other senior members of the Israeli government are reportedly calling for the complete occupation of the West Bank and the massacre of Palestinians. Meanwhile, Knesset members continue to advocate for further illegal settlements.
State-backed violence
The situation on the ground involves settlers who are armed by the state and accompanied by its army. The army itself carries out attacks against civilians. One recent example includes the firebombing of homes in Kafr Malik.
Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank face regular killings, home invasions and the burning of their buildings and farms.
Bias in reporting
There is deep concern regarding how these events are reported in the UK. Violence against Palestinians often receives almost no coverage despite the severity of the harm.
In contrast, when a Palestinian defends themselves, such as in a recent case where an individual disarmed a settler invading Palestinian land, the incident is described as clashes and given extensive attention. This framing obscures who is armed, who is occupying and who is being dispossessed.
This approach mirrors the playbook used to manufacture consent for the destruction of Gaza. It is now being repeated for the West Bank.
