The town hall of Trappes, Yvelines, west of Paris, where President Macron spoke on the evening of the attack

Data Investigation

A gunman shot people in Trappes for looking Muslim or African, and killed Pengo Bossio Wangi. The media made it a story about the protests, buried the motive and moved on.

Kévin T. admitted he chose his victims by how Muslim or African they looked, in a town he called "a haven for Islamists". We read 90 English-language articles from 41 outlets. They folded the killing into the protests, called it random, and 32 of the 41 never reported his confession.

articles called it random after the prosecutor opened a racial motive inquiry

The media took a racist terror attack, turned it into a story about the protests and civil war, buried the motive and moved on.

On Friday 23 October a man drove through Trappes and La Verrière, two towns west of Paris, firing a submachine gun from his car at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children's playground. He shot Pengo dead. Pengo was 26, a French-Congolese amateur mixed martial arts fighter. Seven other people were wounded. One was a girl of 11 who was shot eight times.

Six days later the anti-terrorism prosecutor, Olivier Christen, told reporters what the suspect, Kévin T., had admitted. He had "specifically" targeted people he believed to be Muslim or from sub-Saharan or North Africa, because of how they looked. He chose Trappes because he called it "a haven for Islamists". He said he had "no regrets".

Unfortunately, most of the press never told its readers any of that. By the time the prosecutor spoke, it had moved on. So we went back through every English-language report on the attack in our archive: 90 articles from 41 outlets, published between 23 and 29 October 2026.

What we found:

  • They made it a story about the protests and civil war. The Spectator put the shooting in a column headlined "The spectre of civil war haunts France", the morning after Le Monde warned that words "claiming that France is on the brink of a 'civil war'" kill. Fox News, CBS, Politico and the Telegraph put it inside stories about the protests. The Jerusalem Post headlined it "as France braces for another round of violent protests". The Telegraph later headlined the killer's excuse that he was avenging the looting.
  • They buried the motive. On the day of the attack, 9 of 39 headlines mentioned racism or Islamophobia, although the prosecutor had already opened the case on suspicion of a racial or religious motive. Before the confession, only 3 of 60 headlines called it anti-Muslim. Eight called a terror attack a "drive-by".
  • "At random" outlived the evidence. After the prosecutor said it was investigating a racial or religious motive, 7 articles still presented the shooting as random: the New York Times in its headline, the Jerusalem Post by quoting only that half of the mayor, and the Daily Mail, the Telegraph, Al Jazeera, Politico and the Spectator in their own words, as late as Monday 26 October.
  • Then they moved on. There were 39 reports about the attack on the Friday, 1 on the Monday and none on the Wednesday. When the prosecutor announced the confession, 9 of the 41 outlets reported it. The other 32 include Sky News, CNN, the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, GB News, NBC, CBS, Fox News and the New York Post.
  • No tabloid and no Israeli outlet reported the confession. The Daily Mail, the Mirror, the Express, GB News, Fox News and the New York Post reported the shooting, and so did Haaretz, the Jerusalem Post and the Times of Israel. None of them reported why he did it.

That is dangerous, because a racist killing reported as random, or as one more night of French disorder, never has to be explained. Nobody has to ask where his hatred of Muslims came from.

What Kévin T. did

The attack lasted about 15 minutes. Police arrested him in under 20, with a Sten-type submachine gun and tear-gas grenades in his car. According to the prosecutor, he had booby-trapped his flat with three gas cylinders wired to a timer, deleted his social media accounts and sold his laptop two days before.

Investigators found Hitler's Mein Kampf in his home, and stickers reading "Long live France", "Proud to be French" and "RN", the initials of Marine Le Pen's party. He told them he designed the stickers himself.

This is what the prosecutor said he admitted, as AP reported it:

“The suspect admitted to “specifically targeting” people he believed to be Muslim or from sub-Saharan Africa or North Africa based on their appearance, according to Christen. He added that the suspect said he chose the suburb of Trappes because it is “a haven for Islamists.” The suspect denied any terrorist intent and said “he had no regrets,” Christen added.”

Pengo's sister, Ritsia Wangi, said her family found out from a journalist who phoned her father.

“He died a terrible death. He died all alone. It really was a barrage of relentless gunfire.”

A story about the protests and civil war

The attack came the day before a weekend of protests. Several outlets told it as one more piece of French disorder, and one turned it into a warning about civil war.

“Adding to security concerns, a suspected terrorist attack occurred in the city of Trappes, west of Paris.”

Fox News, 23 October 2026Read the original

One paragraph in a story about 70,000 police being deployed for the protests.

On Sunday 25 October, Le Monde's editorial named the words that lead to attacks like this one:

“Words do indeed kill. Those repeated in the public sphere that cast foreigners as scapegoats for the country's problems. Those claiming that France is on the brink of a "civil war" or a clash of civilizations. And those that replace the necessary analysis of racism and social relations with an anti-Muslim religious narrative.”

Le Monde editorial, English edition, Le Monde, 25 October 2026Read the original

The next morning, the Spectator put the shooting in a column about civil war.

“The authorities have described the atrocity as racially motivated because the white gunman appeared to target people based on their skin colour.”

The Spectator, 26 October 2026Read the original

From a column headlined "The spectre of civil war haunts France". The column is about "far-left extremists" and "young thugs". It gives the attack three sentences.

Notice the Spectator's distance: the authorities "have described" it, and the gunman "appeared" to target people. The column does not mention Pengo.

Le Monde said that kind of talk kills. The Spectator used it about a killing.

Israel National News went further. Five days after the shooting it published an opinion piece by Carroll Barry-Walsh of UK Feminists Against Antisemitism, attacking Macron for calling the attack a turning point. It lists attacks by Islamists on Jews and Christians, never names Pengo, and ends on Muslims:

“Eleven years after that, French students, who would have been younger than Myriam when she was murdered, glorify in song Muslim men who murder children. Jewish children. Some turning points are turns for the worse.”

Carroll Barry-Walsh, Israel National News, 28 October 2026Read the original

A man shot people because he believed they were Muslim. An op-ed about his attack ends on "Muslim men who murder children".

His excuse in the headline

On 24 October Le Monde reported what the suspect had told police in custody. Its headline led with his excuse: "Suspect in racist Trappes shooting said wanted to avenge robbed shopkeepers, targeted people based on skin color".

The Telegraph took it further the next day.

Why he did it: the Telegraph's version and the prosecutor's

The prosecutor, 29 October

The Telegraph put the killer's justification in its headline and tied the people he shot to the protests that had swept France the weekend before. Four days later the prosecutor said the gunman chose the town because he thought it was full of Islamists. In our archive, the Telegraph never reported that.

They called it random

The first quote most outlets ran came from the mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, who told BFMTV the gunman "appeared to be firing at random". Later that day he went further: "What we witnessed today was, objectively speaking, an attack with a racist connotation, and likely an Islamophobic one."

The New York Times put the first half in its headline and the evidence against it in its own report.

The same New York Times report, 23 October

The headline

“One Killed Near Paris After Gunman Fires at Random, Officials Say”

New York TimesRead the original

Its fourth sentence

“But France’s antiterrorism prosecutor’s office said in a statement that it had opened an investigation on suspicion that the shooting was carried out with a racial or religious motive.”

New York TimesRead the original

The Jerusalem Post ran only the "at random" half, with the mayor's early line that there was "no information so far about his motives". It ran under a headline about the protests: "One killed, four injured in Paris shooting as France braces for another round of violent protests".

Others kept saying it in their own words after the president had called it a racist terrorist attack:

  • Daily Mail, 24 October: "The armed man, named locally as 39-year-old Kevin T, fired randomly as he drove through several areas of Trappes and neighbouring La Verriere on Friday morning."
  • Al Jazeera, 24 October: he "fired an automatic weapon randomly at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children’s playground".
  • The Telegraph, 24 October: the suspect was arrested "for shooting dead a 26-year-old in an indiscriminate and apparently racist attack".
  • Politico, 25 October: "France was already reeling after a man randomly opened fire on passers-by in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday, killing one person and injuring five, including a girl of 12."
  • The Spectator, 26 October: "Last Friday, a man opened fire indiscriminately with a machine gun in Trappes, a suburb of Paris."

A man who chose Trappes for its Muslims was not firing at random. Writing it that way takes the motive out of the sentence and leaves a crime with no reason, which is the easiest kind to forget.

Most outlets did quote the mayor's "at random" that day, but next to his words that it was racist and probably Islamophobic. The seven above did not. Two of them came back: the New York Times and Al Jazeera both reported the confession on 29 October. The Jerusalem Post rewrote its report the next morning: it now says Macron called the shooting a "terrorist, racist act", and "at random" is gone. The other four never reported the confession. The Telegraph's report sits behind its paywall. The other three still read as they did, and the Daily Mail kept "fired randomly" even after adding his confession that he wanted to kill "blacks and Arabs":

Daily Mail article, updated 14:40 on 24 October 2026. Headline: 'Racist terrorist' told police he wanted to kill 'blacks and Arabs in revenge for looting across France'. Second paragraph: the armed man fired randomly as he drove through Trappes and La Verriere. A later paragraph: he used a Sten gun to mow down random victims.

The psychiatric exit

On 25 October the suspect's police custody was suspended so he could be assessed by psychiatrists. The BBC's headline was "Suspect in deadly Paris suburb shooting sent for psychiatric observation".

The family's lawyer, Yassine Bouzrou, objected. The BBC and the Telegraph reported it, and the Telegraph quoted him:

“When the attack comes from the far-Right, the psychiatric issue is raised very quickly. The perpetrator is ‘necessarily a deranged individual’. This question, however, is almost never raised with the same insistence when the attack is Islamist-motivated.”

Yassine Bouzrou, lawyer for Pengo's family, The Telegraph, quoting Le Parisien, 25 October 2026Read the original

On 29 October the prosecutor answered the question. Only Euronews reported his answer:

“The suspect had reported psychological and psychiatric problems. However, according to the prosecutor, a medical examination found no acute psychiatric decompensation or signs of hallucinations or delusions that would justify compulsory hospitalisation.”

Euronews, 29 October 2026Read the original

AP's wire report, which ABC News and The Independent ran under the headline "French prosecutor seeks pretrial detention for suspect in shooting near Paris", said the suspect "has a history of psychological and psychiatric problems and of drug addiction" and listed the cannabis and cocaine in his blood. It left out the finding. France 24 put an anonymous source's claim that he "was undergoing treatment for schizophrenia" in the sentence straight after his admission.

Read that headline again. A man admitted targeting Muslims and Africans, and two outlets told their readers that a prosecutor wanted him held.

Then they moved on

On Friday 23 October there were 39 reports about the attack. On the Monday there was one. On the Wednesday there were none. When the prosecutor announced the confession on Thursday, 9 of the 41 outlets came back.

These are the 9 outlets that reported the admission: AP, ABC News, The Independent, the New York Times, Le Monde, Euronews, the BBC, Al Jazeera and France 24. Six of their 10 reports named Muslims in the headline. AP's said "racist motives". The other three named no motive at all.

Le Monde stayed with the story all week: the residents' anger, the mayor's charge that Macron "was not the protector he should have been", the tributes, and a piece on how far-right language reached government. Euronews was the only outlet to report that doctors found no psychiatric crisis.

By type of outlet

We grouped the outlets by the source types in NewsCord's own outlet register, the same labels every story page uses. Western Mainstream covers outlets such as the BBC, the Guardian and the New York Times. Western Tabloids covers the Daily Mail, the Mirror, Fox News and the New York Post. West Asian covers outlets based in the Middle East and Turkey, such as Al Jazeera and Anadolu.

What the groups show:

  • Not one Western tabloid reported the confession. Eight reported the shooting: the Daily Mail, the Mirror, the Express, the Daily Star, Metro, GB News, Fox News and the New York Post.
  • Western mainstream outlets came back less than half the time. 8 of 19 reported the confession, and 3 of those 8 were AP's report and two outlets that ran it, ABC News and The Independent.
  • The Israeli outlets never put the motive in a headline. Haaretz, the Jerusalem Post, Ynet, the Times of Israel and Israel National News published 6 reports on the attack. None had racism or Islamophobia in the headline, and none reported the confession.
  • One of five West Asian outlets came back: Al Jazeera. Al Arabiya, Anadolu, The National and Press TV did not.

Sorted by total articles. Click a heading to sort. "Named the victim" is any article after his name was public on 24 October.

Pengo

His club, the Atch Academy in Aubervilliers, named him on 24 October before the authorities did: "Pengo was one of us."

Of the 30 reports about the attack written after that, 20 used his name. Of the 15 stories that folded the shooting into something else, one did. CBS, Politico, the Spectator, the Telegraph's protest report and Anadolu's all described a death without saying whose. Al Jazeera spelt his name "Pengo Bassio Wangi".

How we counted

How we did this

The sample

Every English-language article in the NewsCord archive with full text, published 23 to 29 October 2026, that mentions Trappes, La Verrière or Pengo Bossio Wangi: 90 articles from 41 outlets. A page saved twice is counted once, and an outlet's own copy of a wire report counts for that outlet. "About the attack" means the headline is about it; "inside another story" means the attack is mentioned in a story about something else, such as the protests. The archive holds what our fleet collects, so an article we did not collect is not counted; we also found headlines, without text, from the Washington Post, RTE, the Globe and Mail, the Sydney Morning Herald and World Israel News between 23 and 24 October, and none from them on 29 October. "At random" counts an article published after the prosecutor said it was investigating a racial or religious motive (first reported in our archive at 1.10pm UTC on 23 October) that presented the shooting as random or indiscriminate in its headline or its own words, or quoted the mayor's "at random" without his words on the motive. Twenty articles in the sample use the word; we read each one, and the thirteen that quote the mayor alongside the motive are not counted. The New York Times report of 29 October was cut off by its paywall in our copy, so we do not say whether it named the victim.

Kévin T. told the prosecutor he felt no regret. Most of the press that reported his shooting never told its readers why he did it.
