Anadolu Agency (English), on West Bank, 21 October 2026

Anadolu reports the detention of Brad Lander, dozens of foreign and Israeli volunteers and Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest, naming Israeli forces as the actor and calling the West Bank occupied. The reporting is straight; the one weakness is that it counts 194 settlements and 400 outposts, and sends the detainees to "a nearby settlement", without once saying what its own earlier reporting and the ICJ say, that the settlements are illegal. It also leaves out the closed military zone order the organisers described and the volunteers' offer to leave.

“194 settlements and approximately 400 outposts”

    What the words do
Counts the settlements and outposts without the word illegal anywhere in the article.
What a reader comes away believing
That settlement building in the occupied West Bank is a demographic fact whose legal status is open or unaddressed.
    What is actually the case
The ICJ's July 2024 advisory opinion found Israel's settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal under international law, and Anadolu's own earlier report on the same olive harvest season called them "156 illegal settlements".

    What is missing

The article gives no account of why the detentions happened. The organisers said Israeli forces arrived about two hours into the harvest, told the group the area had been declared a closed military zone that morning, and that when the group said it would respect the order and leave they were told they could not leave because they had been "disturbing the public order". Without this a reader cannot see that the group offered to comply and was held anyway.

    What is missing

The article does not say that Lander himself was released, which other outlets reported the same day; a reader is left believing the congressional nominee was still held along with everyone else, when it was the Israelis, Palestinians and other foreign volunteers who remained in custody.

US Democratic congressional candidate Lander among those detained by Israeli forces in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces on Wednesday detained Democratic US congressional nominee Brad Lander, ‌an ally of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, along with dozens of activists and Palestinian farmers, as they took part in the olive harvest in the occupied West Bank, an activist said. Palestinian activist Amira Muslim told Anadolu that the Israeli forces held 45 foreign activists, including Lander, as well as 25 Israeli activists, while they were harvesting olives in the town of Husan, west of Bethlehem. She said the Israeli authorities stopped the activists, placed them on buses and transferred them to a nearby settlement. Their final destination and whereabouts remained unclear. The group included activists from "T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights," a Jewish organization based in New York City, Muslim added. No further information was immediately available on the number of Palestinian farmers detained or whether Israeli forces had released any of those held. Lander confirmed his detention in a post on US social media platform X, saying he was detained “along with a group of rabbis & volunteers.” "We were simply harvesting olives in a grove near Nehalim in the West Bank," he added. Noting that the occupation constitutes a crime according to international law, he added: “Harvesting olives isn’t a crime under any law I know.” Attacks by Israeli occupiers against Palestinians and their land in the West Bank intensify during the olive harvest season. The attacks include assaulting farmers, preventing them from accessing their land, stealing crops and damaging trees. Official Palestinian figures indicate that around 750,000 Israeli occupiers live in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, across .

What it gets right

  • “Israeli forces on Wednesday detained Democratic US congressional nominee Brad Lander”

It names who did it in the first words of the article, with no passive construction hiding the actor.

  • “Attacks by Israeli occupiers against Palestinians and their land in the West Bank intensify during the olive harvest season”

It names settler attacks as attacks and names who carries them out, rather than folding them into clashes or tensions.

  • “occupied West Bank”

The headline uses the territory's settled legal description instead of the occupation's vocabulary.
