Laura Kuenssberg Says A Minister May Have Wanted A Threesome With Her

No framing issues found.

Laura Kuenssberg has said a government minister may have tried to have a threesome with her at a party conference. The BBC presenter also claimed another politician had “a little grope” while they attended the theatre. Kuenssberg, who presents the corporation’s flagship Sunday morning political show, made the revelations in a new book. She has refused to name either politician, or said what political parties they represent. On the first occasion, Kuenssberg said she was invited to an unnamed minister’s hotel room for a drink, where she was met by him and his partner.

The unnamed minister was sprawling on his bed with some buttons on his shirt undone. Kuenssberg says she finished her drink and left. Asked by The Times if the senior politician was hoping to have a threesome with her, she said: “Well, maybe they were and maybe they weren’t. As I say, maybe they weren’t and I got it completely wrong. It was very uncomfortable.” Kuenssberg also reveals how a married government minister with whom she had off-the-record coffees with to discuss politics asked her to the theatre.

While there, he had “a little grope”, she said. Kuenssberg’s book also tells how one politician would greet her by kissing her head, while one unnamed peer sent her a “really creepy text” complimenting what she was wearing on TV. Kuenssberg told The Times: “People do things, and human behaviour is a complicated thing and sometimes people behave badly. “There is still a concern in Westminster that particularly young people starting out are sometimes very vulnerable.”

About this analysis

HuffPost UK reports Laura Kuenssberg's account, from her new book and a Times interview, of uncomfortable encounters with politicians, including a minister's hotel room invitation and a 'little grope' at the theatre. The article attributes each claim to her, keeps her own doubts about the threesome suggestion, and says the politicians are unnamed. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “Laura Kuenssberg Says A Minister May Have Wanted A Threesome With Her”

The headline keeps both the attribution ('Says') and Kuenssberg's own hedge ('May Have'), unlike rival headlines that state an invitation to a threesome as fact.

  • “maybe they weren’t and I got it completely wrong”

HuffPost UK prints Kuenssberg's own caveat in full, so the reader knows she is unsure what the minister intended.

  • “She has refused to name either politician, or said what political parties they represent.”

The article tells the reader plainly that no one is identified, so it does not point at any party or person without evidence.
