Andy Burnham on one nation

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.3 findings

Prime Minister Andy Burnham after a parliamentary petition has passed a major landmark. A petition calling for the government to launch a public inquiry has passed more than 20,000 signatures. Concerned campaigners are calling for an investigation into the UK’s relationship with Israel’s actions in Gaza over the last three years . The petition posted on the UK government website passed 28,000 signatures at the time of writing.

It is set to close in April 2027. If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, the inquiry will be considered for a debate in parliament . Due to the petition passing 10,000 signatures the government will be forced to issue a response to the campaign. A statement coupled with the petition reads: “We want the UK Government to launch an inquiry into any British involvement in Israeli operations in Gaza, including the sale, supply or use of weapons, surveillance aircraft and Royal Air Force bases.

“We believe the UK has played a vital role in Israeli military operations in Gaza. “We call on the UK Government to launch a fully independent inquiry into the UK’s involvement since October 2023, which would have the power to question government ministers and officials involved in decision-making processes, particularly relating to: what arms have been supplied to Israel, what RAF bases have been used and why; what intelligence was collected during RAF flights; and what legal advice has the UK Government sought in assessing whether a genocide has taken place in Gaza."

Andy Burnham has not label Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide. The PM has insisted the government will follow the determination of international courts rather than make a political judgment. The development comes after Andy Burnham declared "Britain will continue to act in support of our values" after his government announced sanctions targeting illegal West Bank settlements. Burnham insisted the measures are directed "not at the Israeli people", but towards achieving peace across the region.

The UK has accused the Israeli government of turning a blind eye to the "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians. The Prime Minister stated: "In an increasingly volatile world, Britain must be willing to lead. The British people expect it, as do our international partners, and I am determined my Government will continue to act in defence of our values. "Today, we are bringing forward targeted measures aimed not at the Israeli people, but in support of the two-state solution – and the prospect of Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace.

"The suffering of the Palestinian people is a scar on the conscience of the world. Innocent Palestinians, including children, continue to be killed in Gaza. And there is still a humanitarian crisis, with far too little aid getting in. That's why we are acting and why Britain will continue to act in support of our values."

What we found (3)

The Daily Star tells its reader that Andy Burnham has been forced to break his silence and issue a major announcement over a Gaza inquiry petition, when its own body says the government has yet to respond. It ends its passage on genocide with Israel's denial of 'allegations', and never tells the reader that a UN Commission of Inquiry has found Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Serious

“forced to break silence as public demands answers”

    Why this matters
The words 'forced to break silence' and 'public demands answers' tell the reader that Burnham has already spoken in response to a mass public demand.
    The impression it gives
The Prime Minister has responded to the petition, under pressure from the public at large.
    The context
The body says the government will be forced to respond only because the petition passed 10,000 signatures, and it had 28,000 at the time of writing. No response from Burnham to the petition appears anywhere in the article. His quotes come from an earlier sanctions announcement.

  2. Makes a false claim

    Serious

“has been forced to issue a major announcement”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star states in its own voice that Burnham has already issued a major announcement because of the petition.
    The impression it gives
The government has made a major announcement in reply to the petition.
    The context
The article's own later sentence says the government will be forced to issue a response, in the future tense. The only announcement it reports is the earlier West Bank settlement sanctions, which came before this development.

  3. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Serious

“Israel has denied allegations of commenting genocide.”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star closes its passage on genocide with Israel's denial. In its own voice it calls genocide only 'allegations'.
    The impression it gives
Genocide in Gaza is an unproven allegation that rests against Israel's denial, with no finding behind it.
    The context
A UN Commission of Inquiry has found that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The article never mentions this finding, so the denial stands as the last word on a question the petition itself raises.
