Tap a highlight to see why it matters.3 findings

Fourteen “anti-Israel” foreigners are facing deportation after they were on suspicion of disturbing public order, police said Sunday. During the detainees’ interrogation, “anti-Israel media campaigns,” and that some of them support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, police said, adding that the investigation of the three Palestinians is ongoing.

Israel has restricted the entry of foreign BDS activists for years. A law passed in 2017 allows authorities to deny entry to foreign nationals who publicly call for a boycott of Israel or work on behalf of organizations that advocate such boycotts, . The law does not apply to Israeli citizens or permanent residents. Israeli forces detained the 17 people during an olive harvest on Friday in the Ramallah-area village of Kafr Ni’ma, according to Palestinian activist group Faz3a.

The activist group said the detainees included 12 foreign volunteers, two foreign journalists, two Palestinian landowners and a Palestinian Faz3a activist. and “held them against their will until soldiers and police arrived” and made the arrests. On November 1, police said 13 foreign nationals had been deported after allegedly violating a closed military zone order near the Ramallah-area village of Lubban al-Gharbiya while assisting Palestinians with the olive harvest. Their lawyer, Alon Sapir, told The Times of Israel that the group consisted of 15 foreign nationals who had come to assist Palestinians with the olive harvest. When soldiers arrived at the scene, they presented the group with a closed military zone order that they said had been issued for the area that same day.

What we found (3)

The Times of Israel reports the arrest and planned deportation of foreigners detained at an olive harvest near Kafr Ni'ma, and it includes the Palestinian activist group's account. It never tells the reader that the West Bank is occupied or that the settlements are illegal, even where the story turns on a law punishing boycotts of those settlements. It puts the police label "anti-Israel" in its headline without attribution, and it writes the police account as what "emerged" and the settler attack as a mere claim.

  1. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

“including boycotts targeting West Bank settlements”

    Why this matters
The words "boycotts targeting West Bank settlements" describe a law that lets Israel bar foreigners for calling to boycott settlements. Nothing says what those settlements are in law.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the settlements as ordinary Israeli communities and a boycott of them as plainly hostile to Israel.
    The context
The International Court of Justice found the settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law. The article never says so, although this law is the stated basis for the deportations.

    How we know

    • On the recordThe International Court of Justice's July 2024 advisory opinion found Israel's settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal under international law.icj-cij.org (opens in a new tab)
    • Checked against the whole articleIt never uses the words “illegal”.

    Show it in the article

“arrested alongside three Palestinians in the central West Bank”

    Why this matters
The words "the central West Bank" place the arrests by Israeli police and soldiers on Palestinian farmland with no word for occupation.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes Israeli police jurisdiction over a Palestinian village and its harvest as normal domestic policing.
    The context
The International Court of Justice found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. The article never uses the words occupied or occupation, though the arrests, the closed military zone orders and the deportations all rest on that occupation.

    How we know

    Written straight

Israeli occupation forces detained 17 people at an olive harvest in Kafr Ni'ma in the occupied West Bank, near the settlement of Sde Efraim. Settlements there are illegal under international law, according to the International Court of Justice.

  2. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “‘anti-Israel’ activists”

    Why this matters
The headline puts the police label "anti-Israel" on all 14 foreigners and drops the attribution the body gives it.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that 14 hostile activists were caught, as if that were the established description of who they were.
    The context
The label is the police's. The body attributes it with "police said Sunday", and the activist group says the detainees included "two foreign journalists". Haaretz describes the same people as "foreign pro-Palestinian activists".

    How we know

    Show it in the article

  3. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“The group claimed settlers attacked them”

    Why this matters
The Times of Israel gives the settler attack as something the group "claimed", while the police account throughout is something "police said".
    The impression it gives
A reader treats the attack by settlers as doubtful and the police account as plain reporting.
    The context
Both are one party's account. The article uses the neutral verb for the police and a doubting verb for the people who say they were attacked and held until soldiers came.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“on suspicion of disturbing public order, police said Sunday”

    Show it in the article

“it emerged that they intended to produce”

    Why this matters
The words "it emerged" present what police say came out of the interrogation as a discovered fact about the detainees' intentions.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established that the detainees came to stage anti-Israel media campaigns.
    The context
This is the police's account of an interrogation, given in the article with nothing from the detainees. The activist group says they were volunteers, journalists and landowners at a harvest.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“two Palestinian landowners and a Palestinian Faz3a activist”
