Four out of five new UK jobs created over past decade taken by foreign workers rather than British citizens
Next FOUR out of five new jobs created in the UK over the last decade have been taken by foreign workers rather than British citizens, according to a think tank. The Centre for Social Justice think tank found that out of 3.7 million roles added to the payroll since 2014, only 734,000 went to UK citizens. 4 The findings are part of a report into the welfare system led by Sir Iain Duncan Smith Credit: Getty 4 Advertisement Workers from outside the European Union secured the lion’s share of employment, taking 2.5 million positions, while EU nationals accounted for a further 408,000. The Centre for Social Justice think-tank cautioned that businesses have enjoyed “unprecedented access to overseas labour”. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! It comes as The Sun’s Jobs Army campaign ploughed forward to try and help Britain’s “lost generation” of youngsters into the workplace. Figures from The Centre for Social Justice have now revealed that a post-pandemic hiring frenzy saw migrant worker numbers skyrocket by 2.1 million from 2020 onwards. Roughly 6.7 million individuals throughout England, Scotland and Wales are currently claiming at least one out-of-work benefit. Sir Ian said that the report’s findings showed an economic crisis which “extends beyond the benefit system”. Advertisement He said: “The truth is that successive governments have used welfare over decades to compensate parts of the country for economic failure rather than creating the conditions for prosperity. “Compounding this, ministers have repeatedly pulled the easy lever of immigration rather than providing a better deal for left-behind communities. “Welfare reform, immigration and regional growth must now be treated as parts of the same challenge.” Digging into official HMRC tax data, the CSJ analysis shows the total number of pay-as-you-earn staff swelled from 28.3 million in July 2014 to 32 million by December 2025. However, British nationals made up just 20 per cent of that massive expansion. Advertisement Domestic employment actually went backwards in certain areas, plunging by 53,000 in Scotland and dropping by 32,000 across the West Midlands. Meanwhile, London absorbed an influx of 465,200 non-EU workers during the same timeframe, with the South East welcoming an additional 284,500. Health and social work accounted for 29 per cent of the increase in non-EU nationals on payrolls. This was followed by administrative and support services at 16 per cent, accommodation and food services at 12 per cent, and wholesale and retail at 10 per cent. The 250-page State of Dependency report, put together over a year, said: “The most reckless example of this ‘human quantitative easing’ came after the Covid-19 pandemic when the then-government turbocharged migration with the explicit aim of depressing wages to contain inflation . Advertisement “The number of British nationals on payrolls has fallen in nine of the UK’s 12 regions since 2020, while the number of non-EU nationals on payrolls rose in every single region.” RECOMMENDED STORIES The report found that high immigration also added to the welfare bill with as much as £16billion a year going to foreign nationals. Shabana Mahmood , the home secretary, announced plans last year to double the standard time it takes to qualify for indefinite leave to remain, which grants the right for foreign nationals to live, work, study and claim benefits in the UK permanently, as part of an attempt to tackle the surge.
