GB News's live blog carries the government's case for the Jackdaw gas field approval and nothing against it: the Prime Minister's promise that the field will be heating homes and powering businesses this winter closes the passage unchallenged, when coverage of the same decision puts Jackdaw at about six per cent of North Sea output. The outlet also leaves out the campaigners' condemnation and the manifesto pledge on new North Sea licences.

  1. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Serious

“vowing energy from the field to be "heating our homes and powering our businesses this winter."”

    What the words do
Closes the opening passage with the Prime Minister's promise about what the Jackdaw gas will do, in GB News's own framing verb "vowing", with nothing set against it.
What a reader comes away believing
That the approval straightforwardly means warmer homes and cheaper running costs for British businesses this winter.
    What is actually the case
Coverage of the same decision reports that Jackdaw at its peak would add about six per cent to North Sea output, too little to make a meaningful difference, and that campaigners called the approval deeply disappointing. GB News carries neither point.

    Written straight

The Prime Minister said energy from the field would be "heating our homes and powering our businesses this winter". The field's owner says Jackdaw could deliver around 6 per cent of UK North Sea gas production, and analysts say that is too little to make a significant difference to bills.

  2. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

GB News never reports that environmental campaigners condemned the Jackdaw approval, calling it deeply disappointing and saying it would supercharge climate chaos, with Greenpeace UK naming the influence of fossil fuel lobbyists. Without this a reader believes the only argument about the decision is whether Burnham still means his net zero target.

  3. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article does not say that Labour's 2024 manifesto promised no new North Sea oil and gas licences, nor that Burnham coupled the Jackdaw approval with a pledge to block new licences. Without it a reader cannot see what his net zero commitment is being measured against.

Politics live: Andy Burnham refuses to back down on Net Zero after green light for North Sea drilling

Live Andy Burnham refuses to back down on Net Zero after green light for North Sea drilling Stay up-to-date with all the latest political coverage from GB News below Andy Burnham has insisted Labour's "determination is unwavering" to achieve Net Zero by 2050, despite the approval of the Jackdaw gas field. The Government's backing of the site opens the door to drilling in the North Sea and aims to supply gas to British businesses and homes as early as this month. The site, off the coast of Aberdeen, is one of two North Sea projects, alongside the Rosebank oil field, that have hung over Labour since the previous Tory Government was halted by a legal challenge. Writing in The Guardian overnight, the Prime Minister vowed his Government would not "abandon the responsibility" of Net Zero. "There has been much speculation about what this announcement means for Britain’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis," he told the newspaper. "I want to be clear that our determination is unwavering." Mr Burnham said he is "personally committed to confronting" the challenges of environmental issues, adding: "Britain has just emerged from its hottest summer on record, during which we had nurses collapsing on hospital wards, bus drivers working in intolerable conditions and families losing everything to wildfires. "More extreme weather is forecast in the months ahead. The climate crisis is no distant threat. "It is here, on our doorstep, affecting people’s lives and livelihoods. "I am personally committed to confronting it, and I will not abandon the responsibility we have to future generations." The Prime Minister also said it "makes sense to responsibly use our resources here at home," FOLLOW BELOW FOR LIVE UPDATES THROUGHOUT THE DAY… Sign up to the Politics Newsletter Email address Sign up I agree to receive updates and information about my account, the GB News Community, and related products and services from GB News. Tories push for 'national resilience' vote to ban solar panels from prime agricultural land The Tories will push for a "national resilience" vote to ban solar farms from prime agricultural land, Shadow Environment Secretary Victoria Atkins has told GB News. Ms Atkins, who represents the largely rural seat of Louth & Horncastle in Lincolnshire, is bringing forward her first private members' bill since entering the House of Commons in 2015. During an appearance on Chopper's Political Podcast, Ms Atkins said: "I very much am against it [building solar panels on agricultural land]. "Indeed, for the first time in 11 years of being a Member of Parliament, I've been drawn in the private members' bill ballot, which means I can put a law forward." READ THE FULL STORY HERE. Share Conservatives: Wes Streeting's warning was a clever thing... but we must invest in Armed Forces The Conservatives have said the Government's warning yesterday to stockpile food and water was "probably a clever thing," but insisted more investment must be put towards the Armed Forces. Labour's Be Ready Campaign encouraged people to stock up with food and water supplies to last three days, amid growing concerns over the weather and cyber threats. It has been criticised for "causing panic". Speaking to GB News this morning, Shadow Minister of State for Illegal Immigration, Crime, Policing and Fire Matt Vickers said the warning was a "sensible thing". However, he insisted: "The bigger question is about our defence, about our ability and capability to deal with cyber attacks." The Tory MP pleaded with the Government to spend more on the Armed Forces, stating: "The best way to work towards peace is to prepare for war - if we look weak, that is the biggest threat to peace." He also said reaching the target of 3 per cent investment in defence will be "keeping Andy Burnham up at night". Share Labour: We aren't setting out a shopping list for households Labour has insisted it is not setting out a "shopping list" to households across the country. This is despite the Government's Be Ready Campaign encouraging people to stock up with food and water supplies to last three days, amid growing concerns over the weather and cyber threats. But speaking to Times Radio this morning, Treasury minister James Murray said: "This is not about the Government sending out a shopping list to everyone in the country. "This is about putting the right information there on the government website, having an information campaign so that people are aware about it and then people taking the right choices for themselves about what they need to make sure they have supplies of at home." Mr Murray said the campaign is about "making sure that households are resilient," and ensures the Governement "has a role to play in making sure the national infrastructure is there too."
