(Image: AP) When it comes to military power, Britain is still regarded as one of the world's major players. But a look at the countries with the biggest armed forces shows just how far behind some nations the UK has fallen in terms of troop numbers. New rankings from World Population Review reveal which countries have the largest active military forces, with China leading the way with more than two million personnel. India and the United States are also near the top, while countries including North Korea , Russia and Ukraine have hundreds of thousands of serving troops. Britain, however, doesn't make the top 10. With an estimated 141,100 active military personnel, the UK sits in 35th place on the list. The figures give an idea of the difference in size between armed forces around the world, although having more soldiers doesn't necessarily mean a country has a stronger military. South Korea has around 500,000 active military personnel, placing it tenth in the global South Korea has half a million people serving in its military, which puts it tenth on the list. Its relationship with North Korea goes a long way towards explaining why. The two countries have been divided for decades, and military service is still compulsory for most able-bodied South Korean men. Many spend around 18 months in the army before returning to civilian life. (Image: GETTY) Ethiopia Ethiopia is just ahead, with 503,000 active military personnel. It might not be a country people immediately think of when discussing the world's largest armies, but its armed forces are among the biggest in Africa. Ethiopia has dealt with years of unrest, including the devastating conflict in Tigray. The military has also been involved in security operations beyond the country's borders. Its position on the list shows just how different the world's largest armies can be. (Image: Getty) Iran With around 610,000 serving personnel, Iran takes eighth place. The country has both its regular armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is closely tied to its political leadership. Iran has spent years developing missiles and drones as tensions across the Middle East have continued. Its military has attracted plenty of international attention, although much of that has focused on its weapons and regional influence rather than the number of people serving.
