DUBAI: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has threatened to seize additional territory in southern Lebanon and expand Israel’s permanent security zone if Hezbollah joins Iran in attacking Israel, The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday.

“If Hezbollah joins Iran in an attack on Israel, it will be dealt a heavy blow and lose additional territory in southern Lebanon, in the areas of Nabatiyeh and the Litani, which will become part of Israel’s permanent security zone,” Katz said during a visit to the Israeli military’s buffer zone in southern Lebanon, according to the report.

Katz said the military was prepared to launch a ground offensive, adding that Beirut’s southern suburbs, , would be evacuated and its infrastructure targeted.

“More than 1 million Shiites will become displaced in Lebanon,” he said.

Katz also referred to Hezbollah’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli strike in September 2024, and his successor Naim Qassem.

“Nasrallah destroyed Lebanon’s Shiite community before he was eliminated, and Naim Qassem could annihilate it completely, until he too is eliminated,” Katz said.

The remarks threaten a further expansion of Israel’s military operations and territorial control in Lebanon if Hezbollah becomes involved in a wider confrontation between Israel and Iran.

What we found (1)

Arab News reports Israel Katz's threat to seize more of southern Lebanon and displace more than a million Shia Lebanese, and attributes the threat to Katz and The Times of Israel throughout. It names Israel as the actor in Nasrallah's killing and keeps Katz's word "eliminated" inside his quotation. The only flaw is a minor one: in its own voice the outlet calls Beirut's residential southern suburbs "a Hezbollah stronghold".

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“known as Dahiyeh and a Hezbollah stronghold”

    Why this matters
In its own voice, Arab News describes Beirut's southern suburbs as "a Hezbollah stronghold". It places the phrase right beside Katz's threat to evacuate the area and target its infrastructure.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away seeing Dahiyeh mainly as a Hezbollah military site. Threatening to empty it and strike it then reads as a move against fighters.
    The context
Dahiyeh is a densely populated residential district. Katz's own words in the next sentence say the threat is to displace "more than 1 million Shiites", which shows civilians are the ones affected. The label is Israeli usage, and The Jerusalem Post uses the same phrase. The article gives no evidence of its own for it.

What it gets right

  • “who was killed in an Israeli strike in September 2024”

It names Israel as the actor in Nasrallah's killing and uses the plain word "killed". Katz's "eliminated" stays inside his own quotation.

  • ““More than 1 million Shiites will become displaced in Lebanon,” he said.”

It quotes in full that the threat is to displace a whole civilian community, so the reader sees the scale of what Katz threatens.

  • “The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday”

It attributes the threat to its source and does not state Katz's claims about the security zone as fact.
