The Wall Street Journal has reported there are indications that the US and Israel are preparing to launch a fresh assault against Iran , risking a major escalation in hopes of degrading Tehran's strength and pushing it toward negotiations. An attack could target Iranian infrastructure and nuclear sites. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT "We may do another little Epic Fury," Mr Trump said at a rally last week, referring to the heavy US and Israeli campaign in February that sparked the conflict. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT The White House said it would not comment on "sensitive military plans that may or may not exist." It added: "President Trump keeps all options on the table to ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."

Many analysts believe Iran is not likely to concede under further attacks. The country, which sustained over 20,000 strikes by the US and Israel during the most active phase of the war, managed to attack ships in the Persian Gulf, targeted US troops and warships and brought demands to the negotiation table. "I believe one of the biggest mistakes Israel and the United States continue to make is assuming that another round of strikes against Iran, including attacks on critical infrastructure or the elimination of senior officials, could somehow bring down the regime," said Danny Citrinowicz, a former Israeli military intelligence official.

What we found (1)

The Daily Express reports, on the Wall Street Journal's word, that the US has told Gulf states to prepare for a short, intense campaign against Iran after the midterms. It attributes its claims, names the US and Israel as the side that began the war, and sets the White House line against analysts' doubts. Its one slip is calling Iran's government 'the regime' in its own voice.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “toppling the regime”

    Why this matters
In its own narration the Express calls Iran's government 'the regime' while describing Netanyahu's goals, with no quotation marks or attribution.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes 'regime' as a neutral description of Iran's government, carried in the outlet's voice rather than as Netanyahu's own framing.
    The context
'Regime' carries a verdict on the government's legitimacy. The article puts the same word inside a quotation from a former Israeli intelligence official in S21, but in S8 it uses the word without quotation marks, as the outlet's own description.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“could somehow bring down the regime”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “the heavy US and Israeli campaign in February that sparked the conflict”

It names the US and Israel as the side whose campaign began the war, rather than letting the war simply 'erupt'.

  • “sustained over 20,000 strikes by the US and Israel”

It gives the scale of the bombing and names who carried it out in the active sense, not as strikes with no actor.

  • “The Wall Street Journal has reported there are indications”

It attributes the claim of a coming assault to its source instead of stating it as established fact.
