BBC Question Time erupts into chaos after Zia Yusuf calls Alastair Campbell 'war criminal' Zia Yusuf and Alastair Campbell didn't hold back when it came to debating on BBC Question Time last night Share Article Share Article Facebook X LinkedIn Reddit Bluesky Email Copy Link Link copied Add us as preferred source Comments By Paige Ingram 01:42, Fri, Oct 30, 2026 Updated: 02:35, Fri, Oct 30, 2026 Campbell wags his finger at Reform UK's Zia (Image: BBC) BBC Question Time erupted into chaos last night after Zia Yusuf branded Alastair Campbell a "war criminal" mid-debate.

BBC Question Time was hosted in Warwick this week. The article presents Yusuf as simply bringing up Iraq. It never says that he did so in direct reply to Campbell accusing Reform of selling a pack of lies over Brexit. It places the Brexit exchange at the end, marked only as earlier in the show. Without this link a reader may think Yusuf raised Iraq unprompted.

How we know

Zia said: "You deceived the British people because you and your old boss Tony Blair wanted to go to war with Iraq, and as a direct result of your deception, almost 180 British troops are dead; 600,000 Iraqi civilians are dead... There are people watching this who disagree with you. When you described yourself as a national treasure recently, they would more aptly describe you as a war criminal, and if there were any justice in this country, frankly, you and your old boss Tony would be on trial."

Alastair responded to Zia's comments. Sharing Zia's post, he wrote: "I have heard it from far better people than you and they were wrong too. What I enjoyed was seeing you running away from an argument about Brexit because you would rather talk about anything else.

And I loved the smile being wiped from your face when the young woman tore apart your net zero BS. You’ve got nice suits and nice shoes, but you’ve got more chance captaining the Sri Lankan cricket team than you have of becoming Home Secretary." The public debate between the pair on X divided opinions. One X user wrote: "Love it, Zia. Fearless" while Reform UK Councillor Matt Johnson said: "We're going to make him Home Secretary and you will weep."

Alastair Campbell said: "I will say to Zia and to his friend Nigel that he talked about so lovingly there, Brexit has taken 6-8% out of our economy, if we had not left the chancellor today would have had £90 billion more to spend. He could have doubled the defense budget." Fiona interjected: "That is a projection Alastair, no-one can be sure about that." Alastair continued: "They [Reform] can sit there. The people who gave us Brexit and they now want to give you another set of false promises.

Do not fall for them because they are a bunch of conmen, they're being found out and it's one reason why Nigel Farage will never be Prime Minister of this country." The Daily Express reports a heated Question Time exchange between Zia Yusuf and Alastair Campbell over Iraq and Brexit, and quotes both men at length. It overstates a minute of crosstalk as the programme erupting into chaos, describes Yusuf as smug in its own voice, and never says that Yusuf raised Iraq in reply to Campbell accusing Reform of Brexit lies. None of these problems is more than minor.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “erupts into chaos”

    Why this matters
The Express says in its own voice that the programme "erupts into chaos".
    The impression it gives
A reader expects the broadcast to have broken down, with the debate lost to disorder.
    The context
The article's own account is that the two men spoke over each other for about a minute until Daisy Cooper stepped in, and the show carried on with other exchanges. That is a heated row, not chaos.

“Zia sat with a smug expression on his face”

    Why this matters
The Express describes Yusuf's face as "smug" in its own voice, with no quotation or attribution.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as an observed fact that Yusuf was being smug, a judgement about his attitude.
    The context
Smug is the reporter's verdict on an expression, not something the article reports anyone saying. The article gives no other basis for it.

What it gets right

  • “six inquiries into it, not one of them found that we lied... not one.”

The Express gives Campbell his rebuttal to the war criminal charge in his own words, so the accusation does not stand alone.

  • “That is a projection Alastair, no-one can be sure about that.”

The Express reports the presenter challenging Campbell's £90 billion Brexit figure, so a contested projection is not left unanswered.

  • “Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction (WMD)”

The Express calls the weapons alleged rather than presenting the dossier's claim as fact.
