The Israeli settlement of Esh Kodesh has served as a launchpad for a yearslong campaign of violence against nearby Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank.

Settlers first established it in 2000 as an outpost, illegal under both Israeli and international law. It grew from a collection of makeshift dwellings and mobile homes to a sprawling site.

As it grew, that violence got worse.

For years the state quietly supported its expansion, until December 2025, when the Israeli government retroactively legalized it. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich – a key figure pushing Israeli annexation of the West Bank – celebrated with the settlement’s residents.

Since then, violent attacks on the neighboring Palestinian villages of Qusra and Jalud have only escalated, sometimes with the overt backing of the Israeli military.

After Esh Kodesh’s legalization, settlers establish several new illegal outposts nearby.

And the cycle starts again.

About this analysis

CNN reports how the Esh Kodesh settlement grew from an illegal outpost into a base for settler attacks on the Palestinian villages of Qusra and Jalud, and how the Israeli government retroactively legalised it in December 2025. It names the settlers as the attackers, calls the territory occupied and the outposts illegal, and notes the Israeli military's backing. Nothing in the text misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “has served as a launchpad for a yearslong campaign of violence against nearby Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank”

CNN says plainly that the violence comes from the settlement and is aimed at Palestinian villages. It calls the territory the occupied West Bank, not disputed land.

  • “Settlers first established it in 2000 as an outpost, illegal under both Israeli and international law.”

CNN names the settlers as the ones who built the outpost and states its illegality as fact, not as one side's view.

  • “sometimes with the overt backing of the Israeli military”

CNN does not write the attacks up as clashes between equal sides. It names the part Israeli occupation forces played in the settler attacks on Qusra and Jalud.
