Two Israeli Defense Forces soldiers were killed and three other people were wounded by two suspected gunmen, who were also killed, in a shooting Friday , officials said. Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman, aged 23, from Ashkelon, a squad commander in the Ari Battalion (775), Search and Rescue Brigade and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem, aged 20, from Hod Hasharon, a combat soldier in the Ari Battalion, Search and Rescue Brigade, both died as a result of the attack, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The IDF reported that it responded to a shooting in the Judea Junction area Friday and killed two people it identified as "terrorists." Hours after the attack, Israel ordered the army to prepare for a full closure of the West Bank, according to the Associated Press. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency meeting of his Security Cabinet, claiming Hamas was "planning a major attack aimed at murdering innocent civilians."

Netanyahu also said a large scale operation in the West Bank is to begin soon. INSIDE ISRAEL'S MISSION TO TRAIN CIVILIANS TO STOP THE NEXT OCT 7-LIKE TERROR ATTACK "Our brave soldiers thwarted this attack with courage and determination," Netanyahu said. Israeli intelligence groups and security forces conducted dozens of raids throughout the West Bank on Friday, apprehending dozens of people, including those who Israeli officials claimed were members of Hamas and affiliated with Islamic Jihad. The Israeli army’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, said a "large quantity of ammunition was found" in a vehicle used by the perpetrators. "This ammunition was intended to be used in a larger-scale attack," he said.

What we found (2)

Fox News reports the Hebron checkpoint shooting largely through attributed Israeli official statements. Its headline says the two Palestinian men were "dead" while the soldiers were "killed", and the article never says the West Bank is occupied. Both are minor faults in an otherwise attributed report.

  1. Writes the death out

    Minor

    “Two suspected gunmen dead”

    Why this matters
The headline says the two Palestinian men are "dead" but says the two soldiers were "killed". The deaths on one side get a verb with an actor implied, and the deaths on the other get only a state.
    The impression it gives
A reader skimming the headline learns that the soldiers were killed but not that Israeli forces killed the two Palestinians.
    The context
The article's own body says the army killed them. The outlet's headline drops that actor and uses a softer word for one side's dead.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“killed two people it identified as "terrorists."”

  2. Hedges the documented record

    Minor

    “in the southern West Bank”

    Why this matters
Fox News places the shooting in "the southern West Bank" and never once calls the territory occupied anywhere in the article.
    The impression it gives
A reader is given no sign that the checkpoint, the closure and the raids take place under a military occupation.
    The context
The ICJ has found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful, and other outlets reporting the same shooting call it the occupied West Bank.

What it gets right

  • “killed two people it identified as "terrorists."”

Fox News puts the "terrorists" label in quotation marks and attributes it to the army rather than adopting it in its own voice.

  • “claiming Hamas was "planning a major attack aimed at murdering innocent civilians."”

Netanyahu's claim about Hamas is marked as his claim, not stated as established fact.

  • “those who Israeli officials claimed were members of Hamas”

The affiliation of the people detained in the raids is attributed to Israeli officials rather than asserted by the outlet.
