Support us A woman in her 50s has died after a wave pulled her into the sea as she walked her dog along the Isle of Wight's eastern coastline. The incident took place yesterday morning on a seafront path along the Isle of Wight's eastern coastline, where dangerous conditions persisted in the wake of recent storms.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said they were notified of a "concern for welfare" at 11.17am by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, which reported a woman in the water at Lake. The fate of her dog remains unknown. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say A large-scale rescue effort was mobilised within minutes, with Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 375 scrambled from Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire to scour the shoreline from the air. Bembridge RNLI's all-weather lifeboat joined the operation alongside Coastguard teams and paramedics working from the ground.
Officers cordoned off the coastal walkway between Sandown and Shanklin, near the village of Lake in Sandown Bay and known locally as the revetment, at the southern end of Sandown Esplanade, blocking public access to the area. A coordination point was set up outside the Napoleon's Landing apartment building on the seafront. Waves breaking over the sea wall onto the Esplanade at Shanklin | GETTY Despite the extensive operation, the woman's body was pulled from the water just south of Sandown Pier shortly after midday.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. The deadly incident followed a weekend of punishing weather as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, the season's first two named storms, lashed the country with powerful winds, torrential rain and violent seas. Storm Boelo alone produced gusts of up to 84mph in Scotland, killed two men through falling trees and left hundreds of thousands of properties without electricity. A subsequent alert on Sunday cautioned that Monday morning's water levels were expected to exceed earlier forecasts. After the tragedy, the Isle of Wight Council issued an urgent safety notice urging residents and visitors to take extreme care near beaches, sea walls and exposed coastal paths. Dog walkers were specifically urged to keep their animals on leads near the shore. The council warned that anyone close enough to feel sea spray may already be in a perilous position.
People were also told never to turn their backs on the water or venture near rough seas to take photographs. The council reminded the public to check weather forecasts and tide tables before visiting the coast, especially after storms, when hazardous wave conditions can linger. Hampshire Police said in a statement: "At 11.17am yesterday (Monday 26 October), our Isle of Wight Ambulance Service partners informed us of a concern for welfare of a woman in the water at Lake.
We attended the scene to assist our IOWAS and HM Coastguard partners. "The woman, aged in her 50s, was brought out of the water. Sadly, despite the very best efforts of all emergency services in attendance, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her next of kin have been updated and a file will now be prepared for the coroner."
