Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say 2 oil tankers hit mines, caught fire near Strait of Hormuz

No framing issues found.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said late Saturday that two oil tankers were burning after striking naval mines in and near the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC said the tankers switched off their navigation and positioning systems and attempted to use an unauthorized route. It accused both vessels of multiple violations, saying one was hit east of the strait and the other inside it. Earlier on Saturday, the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said an American aircraft disabled a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman after repeated attempts to breach the US naval blockade of Iran.

CENTCOM identified the vessel as the St. Kitts-flagged Huda and said it had visited an Iranian port. Tensions over navigation in the strait have continued since the US and Israeli offensive against Iran that began in late February and has yet to be settled.

About this analysis

Anadolu reports the IRGC Navy's statement that two oil tankers struck mines and caught fire in and near the Strait of Hormuz, and CENTCOM's statement that a US aircraft disabled a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. Each party's claim is attributed to it, the headline keeps the attribution, and the article names the US and Israeli offensive as the origin of the confrontation. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say”

The headline keeps the IRGC's account as the IRGC's claim. It does not turn the claim into the outlet's own statement of fact.

  • “the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said an American aircraft disabled a cargo ship”

Anadolu names the actor of the attack on the Huda in the active voice and attributes the justification to CENTCOM, giving the US account the same attribution as the Iranian one.

  • “the US and Israeli offensive against Iran that began in late February”

Anadolu names who started the war rather than writing it as a conflict that simply broke out.
