Left out here: Drops what it reported before

GB News gives 9,250 crossings since Andy Burnham entered No10 with no comparison. Its own report two days earlier said crossings were down on the same point in 2025. The Daily Star reported this year's summer arrivals as the lowest since 2020. Without either fact, a reader takes the figure as evidence of a rising trend.

How we know

In the video, a balaclava-clad individual can be seen fighting off migrants in the water as they desperately attempted to climb on board a vessel, with several people appearing to be punched and slapped . The disturbing scenes came on the same day it emerged Ms Mahmood's changes to Britain's migration system are set to be watered down amid a brewing rebellion from Labour's backbenches. Under the Home Secretary's proposals, the wait for migrants to obtain permanent residency would double from five to 10 years.

Her plans would also see the wait for some lower-paid migrants to gain indefinite leave to remain (ILR) increased to 15 years, up from five. The announced crackdown sparked fury among Labour backbenchers, with now-Housing Secretary Angela Rayner branding them "un-British". And now, Government whips have been attempting to avoid a civil war within the party by exploring the views of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP), The Sun reports.

The number of backbench MPs thought to be opposed to Ms Mahmood's proposals is thought to far exceed the confirmed 100 parliamentarians who had signed a letter in protest. GB News builds its headline total of almost 1,400 crossings on counts that contradict each other inside the article, and adds an unconfirmed 200 while admitting the Home Office has not confirmed the total. It turns the Home Office's '934 people' into '934 illegal migrants' the department 'admitted' to. It gives the 9,250 figure since Andy Burnham took office with no comparison, though its own earlier report said crossings were down on the same point in 2025.

  1. Uses figures that mislead

    Serious

“at least six small boats carrying 520 migrants crossed into British waters on Friday”

    Why this matters
GB News repeats its earlier figure of 520 crossing on Friday in six boats.
    The impression it gives
About 520 people crossed on Friday.
    The context
The article's own Home Office figure is 934 over Thursday and Friday, with 263 on Thursday. That leaves 671 on Friday, the figure the Daily Star reports, in nine boats. The article prints both counts and never reconciles them.

“the last four days have seen 1,393 illegal migrants arrive in the UK”

    Why this matters
GB News adds 200 people picked up today to reach 1,393 and states the total as settled.
    The impression it gives
    1,393 is a confirmed four-day count.
    The context
The article gives three different counts for this morning: 122 arrived in Dover, 200 picked up, and 78 picked up. It also says the Home Office has not confirmed the total. The 1,393 rests on the highest of three conflicting numbers.

“Almost 1,400 migrants cross Channel in four days”

    Why this matters
The headline states the four-day total as fact.
    The impression it gives
An official count shows almost 1,400 crossings.
    The context
The body says the Home Office is yet to confirm the total. The figure includes a same-day count that the article itself gives as 122, 200 or 78.

    Written straight

GB News counts about 1,393 arrivals over four days, including people picked up this morning, though reports of this morning's number vary and the Home Office has not confirmed the total. Home Office data show 934 people crossed on Thursday and Friday, 263 of them on Thursday.

  2. Puts its own label in the Home Office's mouth

    Minor

    “admitted 934 illegal migrants”

    Why this matters
GB News says the Home Office 'admitted' to 934 'illegal migrants'.
    The impression it gives
The Home Office conceded, as a confession, that 934 people had arrived illegally.
    The context
The article's own account of the Home Office data says '934 people' crossed. 'Illegal' and 'admitted' are GB News's words, not the department's. The article never says whether any of the people crossing claimed asylum.

  3. Sanitises violence or disorder

    Minor

    “in the scuffle”

    Why this matters
GB News calls a masked person punching and slapping people in the water a 'scuffle'.
    The impression it gives
    There was a mutual tussle.
    The context
The same sentence describes people in the sea trying to climb aboard and being punched and slapped by one masked individual. GB News itself calls these 'disturbing scenes'.
