UK approves new gas field in the North Sea amid concerns about energy security

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.2 findings

The UK government has approved the development of a major new gas field in the North Sea as the war in the Middle East deepens concerns about energy security globally. The Jackdaw gas field, located 150 miles east of Aberdeen in Scotland, “will start to supply gas to British homes and businesses from as early as the end of this month,” the government said in a statement announcing its decision to greenlight production. “The Jackdaw decision is expected to increase domestic gas production by around 6% at its peak – supporting the UK’s gas supply over its lifespan of up to 11 years, boosting our energy security, protecting hundreds of jobs and adding an estimated £2.9 billion ($3.8 billion) to the UK economy,” the statement added.

CNN gives the government's figure of a 6% rise in domestic gas production at peak. It never says that Uplift put Jackdaw's output at around 2% of UK gas demand. A reader may take the 6% figure as Jackdaw's share of the gas the country uses.

How we know

The decision, , comes three months after US President Donald Trump described Britain’s North Sea oil and gas reserves as “invaluable” and welcomed any potential plans to allow drilling. This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN reports the approval of the Jackdaw gas field and keeps the government's claims about jobs, energy security and economic value in the government's own mouth. Its critics get no voice. CNN says only that the decision is likely to anger campaign groups, never why, so the government's case is the only one a reader hears.

“which is likely to anger environmental campaign groups”

    Why this matters
These words are the only place opponents of Jackdaw appear. CNN predicts their anger but gives none of their reasons. The government's benefit claims fill S2 and S3, and Trump's praise for North Sea reserves closes the piece.
    The impression it gives
A reader learns what the government says Jackdaw will deliver. The opposition comes across as a mood rather than a case.
    The context
Campaign groups made specific objections the same morning. Uplift said the field has been oversold, will meet only a small share of gas demand and will be largely unmanned. Greenpeace UK tied the approval to fossil fuel lobbying. Other outlets also noted the tension with Labour's 2024 manifesto pledge on new North Sea licences.

What it gets right

  • “the statement added”

CNN keeps the claims about energy security, jobs and the £2.9 billion boost to the economy as the government's own words. It does not state them as fact.

  • “the government said in a statement announcing its decision to greenlight production”

The supply timeline is clearly sourced to the government rather than asserted by CNN.
