Scientists want to cool down the planet by brightening clouds and refreezing the Arctic

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

TOP boffins are urging Britain and other nations to . The group, led by the government's former chief scientific adviser Sir David King, called for big funding to research ways to "geoengineer" the planet. Some of the ideas include brightening clouds by delivering an electric current from drones and refreezing the Arctic by pumping seawater on the top of ice. Others include putting tiny particles into the stratosphere to scatter sunlight back into space, mimicking the global cooling of a volcanic eruption.

The Government is already spending £67m exploring ways to address global warming after widespread heatwaves and drought this summer. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and ministers are preparing to head to Cop31, the UN climate conference, being held in Turkey next week. King, 87, emeritus professor at the University of Cambridge, said Britain was "way ahead of the game" on such research and called on other countries to step up. He said Australia, France and Japan are among those that should collectively spend about £22.2bn a year, adding: "At the moment we are nowhere near that."

King called the need urgent, noting that Greenland is losing ice at about 30 million tonnes an hour, threatening coastal cities with rising sea levels. And he highlighted the recent deadly Himalayan disasters as a need to protect glaciers. The UK Government has made clear that although it funded geo-engineering research, it does not support deployment.

What we found (1)

The Daily Star reports a call led by Sir David King for big international funding to research geoengineering, and it gives the Government's position that it funds research but does not support deployment. In its own opening line the paper calls the proposals "madcap" schemes, a verdict that nothing in the report supports, while the body describes a call for research money.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“spend billions of pounds a year on madcap planet-cooling schemes”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the Daily Star calls the proposals "madcap" and says the scientists want billions spent on the schemes themselves.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away believing that eminent scientists want governments to pour billions into reckless planet-cooling projects now.
    The context
The body says the group called for funding to research these ideas, and the Government says it funds research but does not support deployment. Nothing in the report backs the verdict "madcap".

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“called for big funding to research ways to "geoengineer" the planet”
    • Elsewhere in the article“although it funded geo-engineering research, it does not support deployment”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “although it funded geo-engineering research, it does not support deployment”

The report gives the Government's position and separates funding research from backing deployment, so the reader knows the schemes are not policy.

  • “Greenland is losing ice at about 30 million tonnes an hour, threatening coastal cities with rising sea levels”

It attributes a specific figure to King and ties ice loss to sea level rise and its danger to coastal cities, with no hedge on the warming itself.
