The flooding along the Budhi Gandaki River was reportedly triggered when a large landslide blocked a tributary before releasing a torrent of water downstream. Nepali army search-and-rescue teams have been deployed by air and land, successfully airlifting six individuals from high-risk areas. Authorities have issued urgent evacuation warnings to residents along the riverbanks, extending downstream towards Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts. The disaster comes as Nepal continues to recover from catastrophic floods in August that killed more than 1,400 people and caused $4.7bn in damage.
