Iran warns war could spread ‘much wider’ if US launches ‘another military adventure’

Findings are available in the analysis below.1 finding

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akraminia, spokesperson for the Iranian army, said Saturday that renewed war would “engulf a much wider area” if US President Donald Trump “resorts to another adventure in the region” alongside Israel. “If the US president once again embarks on another military adventure in the region under pressure from and inducement by the Zionists, the flames of war will undoubtedly engulf a much wider geographical area,” Akraminia wrote on US social media company X. “And the end of the conflict will not be in his (Trump’s) hands,” he warned.

Citing “the US President’s track record of betraying diplomacy,” Akraminia said the Iranian army is “continuously” enhancing its combat readiness and “closely monitoring” US movements in the region. His remarks came as tensions in the Middle East remained high after the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on Feb. 28, triggering Iranian retaliation in the region. Despite subsequent diplomatic efforts and a memorandum signed by Washington and Tehran in June, tensions have persisted over security arrangements and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The article never says that Akraminia's warning followed threats of further military action by the US and Israel ahead of the US midterm elections. The Times of Israel reported this on the same day. Without it, a reader may take the Iranian warning as unprompted rather than as a response to threats.

What we found (1)

Anadolu reports an Iranian army spokesman's warning that a new US attack would widen the war, quoting him accurately and with clear attribution. It names the US and Israel as the parties that launched the February attacks on Iran. It leaves out that the warning followed US and Israeli threats of further military action, a small gap that does not mislead the reader about the event.

What it gets right

  • “after the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on Feb.”

Anadolu names the US and Israel in the active voice as the parties that launched the attacks, rather than writing that a war broke out.

  • “Akraminia wrote on US social media company X”

The spokesman's charged language, including "Zionists", stays inside quotation marks and is attributed to him and to where he said it. It is not adopted in the outlet's own voice.
