Forecasters have scaled back the alert after winds eased across parts of the UK, although people living in the areas still covered by the warning have been told of a possible "danger to life" from flying debris. The warning area has been reduced, with Northern Ireland and central Scotland no longer included. The Met Office has also brought the end time forward, three hours earlier than previously forecast. In an update issued at 1.25pm, the forecaster said: "Warning area removed from Northern Ireland and central Scotland as winds have eased here.

End time of warning brought forward to 6pm on Tuesday." Strong west to southwesterly winds are expected to continue across northern Scotland during Tuesday, with gusts of 45mph to 55mph possible quite widely. Some coastal or exposed areas in the far north could see gusts reach 70mph before conditions begin to improve. The Met Office warns there is a slight chance of damage to buildings, including tiles being blown from roofs, as well as damage to trees. Longer journey times or cancellations could affect road, rail, air and ferry services, while some roads and bridges may also close. Power cuts are possible and could affect other services, including mobile phone coverage. About this analysis

The Daily Express reports that the Met Office has scaled back its yellow wind warning for Tuesday, dropping Northern Ireland and central Scotland and bringing the end time forward to 6pm, while seven areas of northern Scotland and the islands remain covered. It attributes the 'danger to life' wording to the Met Office and gives the forecaster's safety advice. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “Forecasters have scaled back the alert after winds eased across parts of the UK”

The Express tells readers plainly that the warning has been reduced, rather than letting the 'danger to life' line suggest the threat is growing.

  • “Warning area removed from Northern Ireland and central Scotland as winds have eased here.”

The Express quotes the Met Office update directly and gives the time it was issued, so readers can check the change for themselves.

  • “The yellow warning has a low likelihood of between 10 and 25% but is classed as having a "significant" potential impact.”

The Express gives the warning's actual likelihood and impact rating, which puts the headline's 'danger to life' wording in proportion.
