Netanyahu after Hebron checkpoint shooting

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after five people were injured in a shooting at a military checkpoint near the city of Hebron.

“I have instructed the [military] and the security forces to immediately impose a cordon around the city of Hebron and to prepare for a full closure of the entire [West Bank], effective today,” Mr Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.

Israel’s military said it killed two suspects armed with a rifle and a handgun. Two of those injured were reported to be in a critical condition.

Palestinian media reports named the pair as family members Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27 and from Hebron. The military said the men had planned to carry out a "large-scale" attack on Israelis. There are a number of illegal Israeli settlements in Hebron.

Settler and military violence against Palestinians has swept across the West Bank during the olive harvest season, while Israel is preparing to hold elections that could unseat Mr Netanyahu’s ultranationalist coalition government, which has been in power for four years.

After the attack, Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who lives in the illegal Hebron settlement of Kiryat Arba, called for the Palestinian Authority to be dismantled. It is supposed to control parts of the West Bank.

“We have to act before it’s too late. The Palestinian Authority must be dismantled and demilitarised, and its terror infrastructure wiped out completely,” he said.

Israel’s military chief of staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir described the attack as “serious” and said a "large quantity of ammunition was found in the vehicle in which the terrorists arrived at the scene ... which was intended to be used to carry out a larger-scale attack”.

What we found (1)

The National reports the Hebron checkpoint shooting and Netanyahu's closure order. It attributes the army's claims to the army, names the two Palestinians killed, and calls the occupation and the Hebron settlements what they are. Its one slip is minor: the headline and opening line say Netanyahu ordered a full lockdown, while the statement the article quotes says only that a full closure was being prepared.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “orders West Bank lockdown”

    Why this matters
The headline says Netanyahu orders a West Bank lockdown, as if a full closure of the territory is already in force.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the whole West Bank has been placed under lockdown by order.
    The context
The statement the article quotes ordered a cordon around Hebron and preparations for a full closure of the West Bank. Middle East Eye reports the same order as preparations.

“ordered the "full closure” of the occupied West Bank”

    Why this matters
The opening line repeats the stronger version and puts "full closure" in quotation marks, but drops the word "prepare" that sits in the statement.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the quoted statement announced a closure already in effect across the West Bank.
    The context
The quoted words immediately impose a cordon on Hebron only. For the rest of the West Bank they order preparations for a full closure. Deutsche Welle reports the government as preparing to close the West Bank.

What it gets right

  • “who lives in the illegal Hebron settlement of Kiryat Arba”

It states the settlement's illegal status in the outlet's own voice, as the ICJ ruled, and ties the minister calling for collective measures to it.

  • “Israel’s military said it killed two suspects”

It names who did the killing and attributes the army's account to the army, rather than labelling the dead in its own voice.

  • “named the pair as family members Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27 and from Hebron”

It gives the names, ages and home town of the two Palestinians killed, so they are people rather than a number.
