US Central Command announces $20M reward for info on Iranian nuclear program

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.2 findings

Washington is offering a $20 million reward “and possible relocation” for information about Iran’s nuclear program, the US military said Friday, as President Donald Trump reiterated his claim that Tehran wants to make a deal to end the war. A State Department program, Rewards for Justice, “is offering a reward of up to $20 million and possible relocation for information about Iran’s nuclear program, including its facilities, equipment, and associated personnel, such as those in the scientific community,” US Central Command said on X. The program was established in 1984 under the State Department’s national security rewards program to offer money for information that protects American lives and interests.

In its statement about the reward, the State Department said Iran’s “ (International Atomic Energy Agency) on safeguards obligations has led to the agency’s loss of ‘continuity of knowledge’ regarding Iran’s production and inventory of key components like centrifuges. It gave no specific parameters on what information would yield a $20 million reward. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) “If we didn’t hit Iran, you wouldn’t have Israel today,” Trump said Friday night in West Palm Beach, Florida. “If they had nuclear, they would have used nuclear. They would have obliterated the Middle East.” But the president also said Iran — which he stressed has had its economy and military severely damaged over eight months of war — is eager to end the conflict.

The article speaks of Iran being eager to 'end the conflict' after 'eight months of war' but never says the war began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. The outlet reported this itself days earlier. A reader gets only Trump's 'If we didn't hit Iran' to work out who started it.

And on Tuesday Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said his government was still trying to resolve the crisis through dialogue. Earlier this week Trump said he still had to “take care” of one or two targets, including so-called Pickaxe Mountain in central Iran, a suspected nuclear site which Tehran denies is such a facility.

The AFP report, carried by the Times of Israel, sets out a US reward for information on Iran's nuclear programme and mostly marks US claims as claims, including Trump's and the State Department's. US voices fill most of the piece, and the State Department's charge about IAEA compliance stands without any Iranian or IAEA response. Nothing in it amounts to a serious distortion.

  1. One side gets the space

    Minor

“lack of compliance with the IAEA”

    Why this matters
The article reports the State Department's charge that Iran's "lack of compliance with the IAEA" cost the agency continuity of knowledge, and sets no Iranian answer or IAEA wording beside it.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the US account of Iran's dealings with the IAEA as the full picture of the inspections dispute.
    The context
This is one party's charge. Iran's only voice in the article is a single sentence from its president about dialogue and one clause of denial about one site. Most of the piece goes to Trump, Central Command and the State Department.

    What is missing

The article speaks of Iran being eager to 'end the conflict' after 'eight months of war' but never says the war began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. The outlet reported this itself days earlier. A reader gets only Trump's 'If we didn't hit Iran' to work out who started it.

What it gets right

  • “a suspected nuclear site which Tehran denies is such a facility”

The article does not state the site is a nuclear facility as fact. It marks it as suspected and gives Tehran's denial in the same clause.

  • “reiterated his claim that Tehran wants to make a deal”

The article attributes Trump's account of Iran's position to him as a claim rather than stating it as fact.
