The prime minister joined presenters Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid in the studio ahead of the Autumn Budget on Wednesday. The MP for Makerfield appeared on the programme to discuss a wide range of issues, ahead of announcing new funding to tackle homelessness. But before getting into any of that, Reid asked: "Are you softening us all up for an early general election?" Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT Burnham responded: "No, I've ruled that out."

As he attempted to continued, the presenter clarified: "Have you absolutely ruled that out?" Burnham replied: "I have. I did that before the Labour conference because I just don't think people want another backward-looking squabble. Other coverage of the same interview reported viewers complaining that Reid and Madeley kept interrupting Burnham. Without this, a reader believes the viewer anger was aimed only at Burnham.

One fumed: "Burnham can’t even handle a fu****g #gmb interview….. and he is seen as a good communicator. Lies are mounting up! He can’t call an election, as the party majority will be wiped out and won’t survive on vibes." Another said: "How dare Burnham say 'he doesn’t think an election is what people want'. How the hell does he know? Perhaps he should hold a poll. I think he may be surprised." A third demanded: "Burnham out of his depth and hasn't a clue, just call a general election."

Weighing in on the debate, a fourth added: "With respect Andy, I want a General Election, I'm sure others do as well." Later in the interview, Reid argued that election observes think Burnham would be "foolish" not to hold an early election because the latest polls shows a "Burnham bounce". "You began the interview by saying you are going to rule that out. So when can we expect a manifesto which includes rejoining the European Union laid before us on which people can vote?" she asked.

The article ends on Reid's question about a manifesto to rejoin the EU and never gives Burnham's answer. Other coverage reports he ruled out rejoining within this Parliament and signalled it could be a pledge at the next election. Without this, a reader may believe he dodged the question.
